Chapter 7 - The Mastermind UnmaskedThe silence in the study was so thick it felt tangible.

Margaret Hale sat motionless in the leather armchair for several seconds. Then, slowly, a cold, humorless smile spread across her wrinkled face. She lifted her hand, adjusted her designer sunglasses, and pushed them up onto her head, revealing sharp, calculating eyes that looked nothing like those of a retired, doting housekeeper.
“You always were too smart for your own good, Adrian,” Margaret said, her voice losing its polite tremor and dropping into a tone of chilling authority. “I told Vanessa we should have cleaned out the master bedroom more thoroughly after the accident.”
Adrian’s eyes narrowed into slits. “You orchestrated the whole thing.”
“I orchestrated your entire life, Adrian!” Margaret snapped, slamming her hand down on the armrest. “Who do you think positioned Claire in your path ten years ago? Who do you think groomed you to take over the Syndicate when your predecessor became too weak? You thought you were a self-made king, but you were always just a piece on my board!”
Marcus Reed stepped into the room from the doorway, his hand resting on the grip of his sidearm, his face contorted in disbelief. “Margaret… you helped build this family. You raised Lily!”
“I raised an empire, Marcus!” Margaret snarled, turning her venom toward him. “And then Adrian met Claire. A sweet, naive little art teacher from the suburbs who convinced him he could wash the blood off his hands and walk away into the sunset! She was going to destroy everything we built! If Adrian walked away from the Syndicate, our enemies would have butchered us in our sleep within a month. I didn't have a choice. I had to prune the dead weight.”
“She was a mother,” Adrian whispered, his voice dangerously low. “She was my wife.”
“She was a liability,” Margaret spat back. “And you’ve become soft, Adrian. Look at you—holding a child’s teddy bear, crying over a ghost, locking down your own mansion because of a three-year-old’s game.”
Margaret stood up from the chair, pulling a small, pearl-handled revolver from the hidden pocket of her cashmere coat with astonishing speed, pointing it straight at Adrian’s chest.
“And now, unfortunately, you’ve become a liability too.”
Before Marcus could draw his weapon, the study doors flew open wide.
A tiny figure bolted into the room, running straight across the Persian rug.
“Mommy said dinner is ready!”
It was three-year-old Emma Carter, who had slipped past the distracted guards in the hallway while looking for her mother.
Margaret’s head snapped toward the child, her finger tightening on the trigger. “Get out of here, you little rat—”
“EMMA!” Rachel screamed from the hallway, diving forward and grabbing her daughter just as Margaret’s finger twitched.
BANG!
The gunshot shattered the quiet of the mansion, sending a bullet tearing through the wood of the mahogany desk inches from Adrian’s shoulder.
In that fraction of a second, Adrian moved with the lightning-fast reflexes that had kept him alive in the Chicago underworld for two decades.
He didn't reach for a gun. He lunged across the desk, grabbing the crystal ashtray and smashing it directly into Margaret’s wrist with bone-crunching force.

The pearl-handled revolver slipped from her fingers, clattering loudly against the hardwood floor.
Marcus was on her instantly, shoving the elderly matriarch back into the armchair and pinning her arms behind her back with brutal efficiency.
