Chapter 5 - The Second MessageThe heavy oak doors burst open before the guards could react.

It was one of the perimeter security captains, his face pale and slick with rain, holding a heavy tactical radio in his hand.

“Boss!” the captain yelled, panting heavily. “We just intercepted an encrypted transmission coming from the perimeter gatehouse. Someone just tried to override the lockdown protocols from an external terminal!”

Adrian dropped Vanessa back onto her feet, though he kept a crushing grip on her arm.

“Who?” Adrian snapped.

“Not an intruder, sir,” the captain said, breathless. “It was an automated relay set to trigger the moment someone opened or deleted files on the main estate server. It’s… it’s a secondary message, sir. Set to transmit directly to federal authorities if not deactivated within ten minutes.”

Marcus stepped forward, his eyes widening in alarm. “A dead man’s switch. Claire set a dead man’s switch.”

Vanessa let out a sudden, hysterical laugh, struggling against Adrian’s grip. “You’re too late, Adrian! Even if you kill me right now, the federal prosecutor’s office in downtown Chicago is already downloading every single financial record, offshore account, and illegal wire transfer your empire is built on! Claire didn't just leave a voice recording in a bear—she handed your entire syndicate to the FBI on a silver platter!”

The room went dead silent.

Marcus stared at Adrian in horror. If the federal authorities received those files, the Vale Syndicate would crumble within twenty-four hours, and Adrian would spend the rest of his life in a maximum-security federal penitentiary, leaving little Lily completely alone in the world.

“Where is the decryption key?” Adrian asked, his voice dropping into a lethal whisper as he stared down at Vanessa.

“There is no key,” Vanessa smiled, blood running down her lip where she had bitten it in panic. “It’s set on a timer. Five minutes, Adrian. Four minutes now.”

Adrian didn't hesitate. He thrust Vanessa toward Marcus.

“Lock her in the panic room and don't let her speak another word,” Adrian commanded.

“Where are you going?” Marcus yelled as Adrian bolted toward the door.

“To find the rest of the puzzle,” Adrian threw over his shoulder. “Claire wasn't stupid. She wouldn't leave a dead man’s switch without a way to turn it off—not if she wanted to protect her daughter.”

Adrian sprinted down the dimly lit hallway, his mind racing through every corner of the massive mansion. If Claire wanted to leave a counter-measure for the federal upload, she wouldn't hide it in the study or the master bedroom where Vanessa spent all her time.

She would hide it somewhere only a mother would look.

He reached the nursery on the third floor.

Inside, the room was quiet, bathed in the soft blue glow of a nightlight. Lily’s bed was neatly made, and hundreds of stuffed animals lined the shelves along the walls.

Adrian stood in the center of the room, breathing heavily.

Think, Claire. Where would you put it?

His eyes scanned the shelves, landing on a row of old photo albums, baby books, and childhood memorabilia.

Then he remembered what little Emma Carter had been holding earlier today when she sat on the rug.

A plastic sewing needle.

Adrian rushed to the shelf and grabbed a large, vintage rocking horse that had belonged to Claire when she was a child. He flipped it over, checking the wooden belly.

Nothing.

He tore open the storage chest beneath the window, tossing aside woolen blankets and winter clothes.

Nothing.

The digital timer in his pocket—linked via secure relay to the perimeter gatehouse—began to beep softly.

Two minutes remaining.

Adrian slammed his fist against the wooden bookcase in frustration, sending a row of children’s storybooks crashing to the floor.

As the books scattered across the rug, something small and white rolled out from the pages of a worn copy of The Velveteen Rabbit.

It wasn't a recorder.

It was a micro-SD card, wrapped neatly inside a small piece of paper bearing Claire’s handwriting:

“To my loving husband. If you found this, it means you finally stopped running from the truth. The password to cancel the federal transfer is Lily’s birthday, followed by the day we met. I love you both.”

Adrian didn't waste a single second. He pulled his encrypted satellite phone from his pocket, slotted the micro-SD card into the reader port, and typed in the numbers as the timer ticked down to thirty seconds.

0-3-1-2-2-0-1-5.

The screen flashed green.

“Upload cancelled. System secured.”

Adrian exhaled a breath he felt like he had been holding for eleven months.
