Chapter 2 - "THE PHONE MESSAGES WERE A TRAP, BUT THE CONSEQUENCES WERE REAL"

By 3:00 AM, the penthouse on the Upper East Side was silent.

Daniel stood in the middle of their master bedroom. The closet doors were wide open. Amy hadn't cleaned out her wardrobe; she had taken a single suitcase. On her nightstand rested her house keys, her corporate credit card, and the set of custom diamond earrings he’d bought her for their fifth anniversary. She had stripped away every single link to his wealth.

"Sir," his Chief of Security, Marcus, said softly from the doorway. "We tracked the hired car. She was dropped off at JFK at midnight. She paid for a ticket using a debit account she opened under her maiden name three years ago."

"Where was the flight going?" Daniel demanded, his eyes bloodshot, his hands trembling as he held the ultrasound picture.

"Portland, Oregon. From there, she rented a sedan. But she disabled the GPS tracking on the rental car forty minutes after leaving the airport. She knows our protocols, sir. She’s deliberately erasing her tracks."

Daniel sank onto the edge of the bed, burying his face in his hands. He remembered the messages on his phone—the texts from Vanessa that Amy had seen.

Miss you already. Wish we were still in Chicago.

Daniel had let Vanessa send those texts. He had enjoyed the subtle ego boost, the thrill of being pursued by a powerful woman, convincing himself that as long as he didn't cross the physical line, he was innocent. But Vanessa had crafted those messages specifically to break Amy, and Daniel had provided the weapon.

Meanwhile, three thousand miles away, the coastal rain battered the small window of an apartment above The Salt & Quill, a sleepy bookstore nestled against the harbor of Newport, Oregon.

Amy sat on a worn velvet sofa, wrapped in a thick wool blanket, sipping hot chamomile tea. Across from her sat Sarah, her oldest friend from college, who was currently quietly wiping away tears.

"Are you sure about this, Amy?" Sarah asked gently. "He’s a billionaire. He has resources you can’t even imagine. If he realizes where you are—"

"He won't look here," Amy said quietly, her hand resting gently over her swollen stomach. "Daniel thinks in terms of power, capitals, and financial hubs. To him, the world consists of New York, London, and Tokyo. He doesn't know this place exists."

She looked out at the dark ocean waves crashing against the pier. For seven years, she had lived in a gilded cage, starving for love while surrounded by luxury. Now, her bank account held only a few thousand dollars, her home was a three-room flat above a bookstore, but for the first time in years, she took a deep, clear breath.
