Chapter 7 - "A THREATENED WOMAN DOES THE UNTHINKABLE ON THE EDGE OF THE CLIFF"

"Vanessa?" Daniel turned, his shock turning instantly into cold fury. "How the hell did you get here?"

"I followed your jet’s flight plan, Daniel!" Vanessa spat, her voice shrill against the sound of the rain. She stepped into the shop, water dripping from her coat onto the rug. "You ruined my family! You canceled the merger! My father lost millions because you suddenly lost your mind over her!"

She pointed a trembling, manicured finger at Amy.

"You spent three months tearing down everything we built, Daniel! For what? For a quiet little nobody hiding in a pathetic fishing village?"

"Get out," Daniel said, his voice dropping into a terrifying register. He stepped directly between Vanessa and Amy, his posture protective and lethal. "If you step one inch closer to my wife, Vanessa, I will ensure you and your family spend the rest of your lives in financial ruin."

"She destroyed us!" Vanessa screamed, completely unhinged. She reached into her coat pocket and pulled out a small, heavy silver object—a sleek, compact firearm.

Amy gasped, her hands immediately cradling her stomach.

"Vanessa, stop!" Daniel shouted, raising his hands, taking a slow step toward her. "Look at me! Look at me, Vanessa! This is between you and me. Amy has nothing to do with this!"

"She took you away from me!" Vanessa sneered, her hand shaking violently as she aimed the weapon. "You were supposed to be my partner! We were supposed to rule Manhattan together!"

"I never loved you!" Daniel yelled, the harsh truth ripping through the quiet bookstore. "I never even wanted you! You were just a distraction from my own failures as a man! Amy is my life! She has always been my life!"

Tears of rage spilled from Vanessa’s eyes. She cocked the hammer. "Then you can die together."

Daniel didn't hesitate. As Vanessa pulled the trigger, he lunged forward with everything he had.

A deafening BANG shattered the air of the bookstore.
