CHAPTER 4 — The Woman in Gray Takes the Throne

By sunset, Hamilton Tower no longer felt like a company.
It felt like a courtroom.
Employees stood in silent clusters near the elevators, whispering about the woman in the gray sweater.
Emily Carter.
The woman they had mocked.
The woman security had almost dragged out.
The woman the CEO called Boss.
Inside the executive boardroom, the air was colder than glass.
Four arrested executives were gone.
Vanessa Brooks was in federal custody.
But Emily knew the real danger had not left the building.
Because fraud that large never belonged to one person.
It had roots.
Deep roots.
Richard placed a sealed folder in front of her.
"We found something else."
Emily opened it.
Inside was a list of names.
Board members.
Investors.
Law firms.
Government consultants.
And one name circled in red.
Charles Veyron.
Emily's face changed for the first time.
Richard noticed.
"You know him?"
Emily closed the folder slowly.
"He's the reason I disappeared three years ago."
Richard went silent.
Emily stood and looked out over the city.
"Vanessa was stealing money."
"But Charles was stealing the company."
At that moment, the boardroom doors opened.
An elderly man entered in a dark tailored suit.
Silver hair.
Calm smile.
Cold eyes.
Charles Veyron.
The most powerful chairman Hamilton had ever had.
Everyone stood.
Emily did not.
Charles looked at her old sweater, her worn bag, her tired shoes.
Then he smiled.
"So the little ghost finally came back."
Richard stepped forward.
"Mr. Veyron, this is a private emergency board meeting."
Charles laughed softly.
"Private?"
He placed his cane on the table.
"I built half this board."
Then he looked directly at Emily.
"And I buried you once."
The room froze.
Emily's voice stayed calm.
"You tried."
Charles leaned closer.
"You were supposed to stay gone."
Emily smiled faintly.
"That was your mistake."
Charles turned to the board.
"Ladies and gentlemen, Miss Carter may own shares..."
"But she is mentally unstable."
Gasps echoed.
He pulled out medical documents.
"Three years ago, she suffered a breakdown."
"She vanished."
"She abandoned her duties."
"She cannot legally control this company."
Richard's face tightened.
"Those documents are fake."
Charles smiled.
"Can you prove that before tomorrow morning?"
Then he dropped the final blow.
"I am filing an emergency injunction tonight."
"By sunrise, Emily Carter will be removed from power."
Everyone looked at Emily.
Waiting for fear.
Waiting for panic.
But she simply picked up her old handbag.
Then removed a second key.
A black one.
Charles' smile disappeared.
May you like
Emily looked at him and said softly:
"You should have wondered why I let you walk in here."
