CHAPTER 6 — The File That Broke Her Silence

That night, Hamilton Tower emptied.

Only one light remained on.

Emily sat alone in the founder's office.

For three years, she had trained herself not to cry.

She had survived betrayal.

Public humiliation.

Financial ruin.

Fake medical accusations.

But the file on the screen made her hands tremble.

CARTER FAMILY ACCIDENT.

Richard stood quietly at the door.

"You don't have to open it tonight."

Emily stared at the file.

"My parents died when I was seventeen."

"They told me it was an accident."

Richard said nothing.

Emily clicked the file.

A police report appeared.

Then surveillance photos.

Then an audio recording.

Her father's voice.

"Charles, if you touch my daughter or the company, I'll expose everything."

Then Charles' voice.

"You should have stayed out of my way."

Emily stopped breathing.

The next document appeared.

A payment receipt.

A vehicle tampering report.

A witness statement that had been buried.

Her parents had not died in an accident.

They had been murdered.

The room blurred.

For the first time all day, Emily dropped the mask.

She covered her mouth.

Richard stepped closer.

"Emily..."

She shook her head.

"He killed them."

Her voice broke.

"He took my parents..."

"Then tried to take the company they built for me."

Richard lowered his head.

"I'm sorry."

Emily wiped her tears quickly.

Then looked at the final page.

There was one more name attached to the cover-up.

Not Charles.

Not Vanessa.

Someone closer.

Someone Emily had trusted since childhood.

Her legal guardian.

The woman who raised her after her parents died.

Margaret Hale.

Emily stood so fast the chair rolled back.

Richard looked stunned.

"Margaret?"

Emily's voice became cold.

"She signed the false death report."

At that exact second, her phone rang.

Unknown number.

Emily answered.

A familiar elderly voice spoke softly.

"Emily, sweetheart..."

"I was wondering when you'd find out."

Emily froze.

Margaret continued:

"Come home alone."

"And bring both keys."

The line went dead.

Richard reached for his phone.

"We call the police."

Emily stared out at the dark city.

"No."

Richard looked at her.

"Boss, this could be a trap."

Emily picked up the silver key.

Then the black key.

Her eyes were full of pain...

But also fire.

"It is a trap."

"That's why I'm going."

And as Emily walked out of Hamilton Tower alone...

She finally understood the truth.

The people who called her useless were never the real enemy.

May you like

The real enemy...

Had been waiting for her at home.
