CHAPTER 8 — The Child She Never Knew Existed

Dylan snapped his fingers.

A hidden door behind the fireplace slowly opened.

A young boy, about eight years old, walked into the room.

Messy dark hair.

Bright hazel eyes.

A small scar above his eyebrow.

He looked frightened.

Emily couldn't breathe.

The boy stared at her.

Then whispered,

"...Mom?"

Silence.

Emily's knees nearly gave out.

"No..."

"No, that's impossible."

Dylan laughed.

"Isn't this beautiful?"

Margaret burst into tears.

Emily looked at the child again.

Every feature reminded her of someone.

Herself.

The boy slowly walked closer.

"They told me you'd come someday."

Emily shook her head.

"I've never had a child."

Dylan smiled.

"No..."

"But your parents did."

Emily frowned.

"What?"

He tossed a faded hospital file onto the floor.

Emily opened it with trembling hands.

Inside...

A birth certificate.

Twins.

Emily Carter.

Ethan Carter.

Her vision blurred.

"You had a twin brother."

"He survived."

"You were separated after your parents were murdered."

Emily couldn't believe what she was reading.

Her entire life had been a lie.

Dylan continued,

"I couldn't kill both of you."

"So I kept the boy."

"He became my insurance policy."

The child looked confused.

He reached toward Emily.

"I've always wanted a family."

Emily dropped to her knees and hugged him tightly.

Tears streamed down both their faces.

"I'm so sorry..."

"So... so sorry..."

For years, Ethan had believed Dylan was his father.

He had never known the truth.

Margaret sobbed quietly.

"I wanted to tell you..."

"But he threatened to kill Ethan."

Emily stood slowly.

Her tears disappeared.

Only anger remained.

She handed both keys to Dylan.

Richard's warning echoed in her mind.

Yet she let the keys go.

Dylan smiled triumphantly.

"I knew blood was your weakness."

He grabbed the keys.

Then pressed a hidden button.

A steel vault behind the fireplace began opening.

Inside...

Were billions of dollars in bearer bonds...

Original ownership contracts...

And every legal document proving control of Hamilton Global.

Dylan reached inside greedily.

The instant his fingers touched the files...

A loud mechanical voice echoed through the mansion.

"Founder Security Protocol Activated."

Red lights flooded the room.

Heavy steel doors slammed shut.

Every exit locked automatically.

Dylan frowned.

"What?"

Emily smiled for the first time all night.

"You forgot one thing."

May you like

"My father built this vault."

"It only obeys Carter blood."
