CHAPTER 9 — The Final Trap

Sirens echoed beneath the mansion.

Not outside.

Inside.

The entire estate had transformed.

Hidden walls slid open.

Security cameras activated.

Dozens of concealed safes emerged from the floors.

Dylan stared in horror.

"What did you do?"

Emily calmly picked up a small silver pendant hanging inside the vault.

"My father left one final instruction."

She pressed the pendant against the black key.

A green light flashed.

A holographic recording appeared above the fireplace.

Her father's face filled the room.

If you are watching this...

Then I have failed to protect my family.

Emily...

Never trust power.

Never trust wealth.

Trust character.

And if my brother Dylan ever enters this room...

It means he has finally revealed who he truly is.

The recording shifted.

Every conversation Dylan had secretly held over the past twenty years appeared on screen.

Murder plans.

Bribes.

Blackmail.

International money laundering.

Even Charles looked terrified in the recordings.

Dylan screamed,

"Turn it off!"

Emily folded her arms.

"You wanted Hamilton."

"My father wanted justice."

Suddenly—

The mansion's underground security doors burst open.

Federal agents.

State police.

Financial crime investigators.

And Richard Hamilton.

He had tracked Emily's car despite her telling him not to follow.

Richard looked at her with relief.

"I knew you wouldn't let me stay behind."

Dylan pulled a pistol from his jacket and grabbed Ethan.

"Nobody move!"

The room froze.

Ethan began crying.

Emily slowly stepped forward.

"You've already lost."

Dylan shouted,

"I'll kill him!"

Emily didn't stop walking.

"You've spent twenty years stealing everything that wasn't yours."

"My company."

"My childhood."

"My parents."

"My brother."

"But tonight..."

"You leave with nothing."

Dylan fired.

A deafening gunshot echoed through the mansion.

Richard dove toward Emily.

Margaret screamed.

The room exploded into chaos.

When the smoke cleared...

One person was lying on the floor.

Covered in blood.

Emily looked down in horror.

It wasn't Richard.

It wasn't Ethan.

It wasn't Dylan.

It was...

Margaret.

She had stepped between the bullet and Emily.

With her last breath, Margaret grasped Emily's hand.

"I couldn't save your parents..."

"But... I saved... their daughter..."

Her hand slowly slipped away.

Dylan was tackled to the ground by federal agents and handcuffed.

As they dragged him away, he laughed like a man who had lost everything.

Emily held Margaret in her arms, tears falling onto the woman who had betrayed her...

...and redeemed herself in her final moment.

But just as the ambulance doors closed...

One investigator approached Richard with a sealed envelope recovered from the hidden vault.

Across the front, in Emily's father's handwriting, were seven chilling words:

"Do Not Open Until Dylan Is Caught Alive."

Emily looked at the envelope.

Richard looked at her.

Neither of them knew...

The final secret inside would change the Carter family's history forever.
