CHAPTER 1 — The Will That Turned Brothers Into Enemies

The Whitmore mansion had never felt colder.

Not because of the rain.

Not because of the funeral.

Because everyone inside was waiting for one thing.

Money.

Richard Whitmore had spent fifty years building one of America's largest real estate empires.

Five billion dollars.

Luxury hotels.

Private islands.

Hundreds of properties across the country.

To the world...

He had been a legendary businessman.

To his four children...

He had become a prize.

The moment the funeral ended...

No one cried anymore.

They argued.

"I sacrificed my entire career for Dad!"

Michael slammed his hand against the antique dining table.

"I deserve controlling ownership."

His younger brother Daniel laughed.

"You visited him twice in the last five years."

"I ran the company while you played golf."

Across the room...

Their sister Victoria folded her arms.

"You two forget something."

"I'm the oldest."

"Dad promised this company would stay in my hands."

Emily...

The youngest.

Sat silently beside the fireplace.

No expensive suit.

No lawyer.

No argument.

She simply stared at the family portrait hanging above the mantel.

The last photograph taken before everything changed.

Back when they still smiled together.

Before greed replaced love.

Attorney Benjamin Hayes finally entered carrying a thick leather briefcase.

Everyone immediately became quiet.

Benjamin looked around the room.

"I've represented Richard Whitmore for twenty-eight years."

"I have never seen him more disappointed than during the last year of his life."

Nobody answered.

Benjamin slowly removed the sealed envelope.

"This document was signed three weeks before Mr. Whitmore passed away."

Michael smiled confidently.

Daniel loosened his tie.

Victoria reached for her notebook.

Emily didn't even look up.

Benjamin broke the wax seal.

Richard's recorded voice suddenly filled the room.

"If you're hearing this..."

"...it means I'm gone."

Silence swallowed the mansion.

"I know exactly why every one of you is sitting there."

"Not because you miss me."

"Because you want what's mine."

Michael's smile disappeared.

Richard continued.

"For years..."

"I watched my children stop becoming siblings..."

"...and start becoming competitors."

"You fought over business."

"You fought over attention."

"You even fought over who would inherit my fortune before I was dead."

Victoria lowered her eyes.

Daniel looked away.

Then Richard spoke the sentence that froze everyone.

"So I've decided..."

"...none of you will receive a single dollar."

The room exploded.

"What?"

"This has to be a joke!"

"You can't do this!"

Michael stood so violently his chair crashed onto the marble floor.

Benjamin calmly raised one hand.

"The recording isn't finished."

Richard's voice returned.

"My fortune will belong to the only child who proves this family is still worth saving."

"If you fail..."

"Everything I built will disappear forever."

Then...

The recording ended.

No explanation.

No instructions.

Only silence.

The inheritance they had spent years fighting over...

Had suddenly become a mystery.

None of them noticed...

Benjamin quietly sliding a second sealed envelope beneath the table.

One that Richard had specifically ordered...

May you like

No one could open...

Until the first betrayal happened.
