CHAPTER 4 — The Vault Beneath the Mansion
The steel door beneath the mansion opened with a sound that made everyone stop breathing.
Michael grabbed the flashlight first.
"No one touches anything before I do."
Emily looked at him with tears in her eyes.
"Even now?"
He ignored her.
They descended the hidden staircase together.
At the bottom was not gold.
Not diamonds.
Not cash.
Only four old boxes.
Each had a name.
Michael. Daniel. Victoria. Emily.
And one fifth box...
With a name none of them recognized.
Samuel.
Victoria whispered, "Who is Samuel?"
Benjamin's face turned pale.
"Your father had another son."
Michael laughed bitterly.
"Of course he did."
But Emily stepped closer to the fifth box.
Inside was a photograph.
Richard Whitmore holding a newborn baby.
Beside him stood a young woman with tired eyes.
On the back, Richard had written:
"The child I failed first."
Daniel opened his box.
Inside was a video tape.
Victoria found letters.
Michael found bank records.
Emily found a small silver necklace.
Then a screen on the wall turned on by itself.
Richard appeared.
Older.
Weaker.
But his eyes were sharp.
"If you've reached this room, then greed has already wounded this family."
He paused.
"But the truth will either destroy you..."
"...or save you."
Then he said the words that changed everything.
