CHAPTER 3 — The Brother Who Was Never Meant to Inherit

The next morning...

Michael called an emergency family meeting.

His expression was different.

Too calm.

Too confident.

"I've solved Dad's little puzzle."

Daniel narrowed his eyes.

"What are you talking about?"

Michael placed a stack of documents on the table.

"I found construction records."

"There isn't one vault."

"There are two."

Benjamin immediately stood.

"That's impossible."

Michael smiled.

"Is it?"

He spread out blueprints of Richard Whitmore's private bank building.

Hidden beneath the original vault...

Was another chamber.

One never registered with the bank.

One built twenty-two years earlier.

Victoria whispered,

"So Dad lied to everyone..."

Michael looked at Emily.

"No."

"He lied to you."

Before anyone could react...

The front doors opened.

Two elderly police detectives entered alongside a gray-haired woman carrying a weathered envelope.

Benjamin's face turned pale.

"I haven't seen you in twenty years."

The woman nodded.

"You weren't supposed to."

She turned toward the Whitmore siblings.

"My name is Eleanor Hayes."

"I was your father's first attorney."

"And I've been waiting for this day."

She placed the envelope on the table.

Across the front...

Richard had written one sentence.

"Open only if my children choose money before each other."

Benjamin slowly broke the seal.

Inside...

There was no will.

No ownership papers.

No list of assets.

Only a faded birth certificate.

Everyone leaned closer.

Daniel frowned.

Victoria gasped.

Michael's face lost all color.

The father's name read...

Richard Whitmore.

The mother's name...

Was not their mother's.

Benjamin looked up with trembling hands.

Richard's letter began:

"Before you divide my fortune... you deserve to know the truth."

"One of you is not my biological child..."

The room fell silent.

Then came the sentence that shattered every certainty they had ever lived with.

"And one of you... isn't my child at all."

Michael whispered,

"Who?"

Benjamin turned to the last page.

His voice barely audible.

"I already know the answer."

Then...

The mansion lights suddenly went out.

Every security alarm began screaming.

And somewhere deep beneath the house...

May you like

A massive steel vault door...

Slowly unlocked by itself.
