CHAPTER 2 — The Game Their Father Planned Before He Died

The shouting lasted nearly an hour.

Michael accused Daniel of manipulating their father.

Daniel claimed Victoria had poisoned Richard against everyone.

Victoria threatened lawsuits.

Emily remained silent.

Benjamin waited.

Exactly as Richard predicted.

Finally...

He stood.

"There is another document."

The room instantly froze.

Michael stepped forward.

"I knew it."

Benjamin shook his head.

"This isn't another will."

"It's... your father's final challenge."

He unfolded several handwritten pages.

"Each of you will receive one key."

"One key opens a safety deposit box."

"But no single key can open it alone."

Daniel frowned.

"So?"

Benjamin continued.

"The vault only opens if all four siblings arrive together."

Victoria crossed her arms.

"And if someone refuses?"

Benjamin looked directly at her.

"Then every company."

"Every property."

"Every investment."

"Will automatically transfer to the Whitmore Family Foundation."

Michael nearly shouted.

"That's blackmail!"

Benjamin quietly replied,

"No."

"That was your father's last lesson."

Emily finally spoke.

"What is inside the vault?"

Benjamin smiled sadly.

"I honestly don't know."

"Richard never told me."

"He only said..."

"...'If they still hate each other after seeing what's inside, then I failed as a father.'"

Michael immediately reached for his key.

"So let's go."

Daniel stopped him.

"Not so fast."

"What if the vault contains another will naming only one heir?"

Victoria nodded.

"Exactly."

"No one should trust anyone."

Within minutes...

They hired private investigators.

Financial advisors.

Personal attorneys.

Each sibling secretly followed the others.

Phones were tapped.

Drivers were bribed.

Employees were questioned.

Family dinners disappeared.

Suspicion replaced every conversation.

Only Emily refused to participate.

Instead...

She drove to the nursing home where Richard had volunteered every Christmas.

The elderly caretaker smiled sadly.

"Your father visited every week."

Emily blinked.

"He never told us."

"No."

"He said generosity loses its meaning once it becomes a performance."

The caretaker handed Emily an old notebook Richard had forgotten.

Inside...

Every page contained handwritten entries.

Not about business.

Not about investments.

But about his children.

Michael...

Age eight.

"He shared his birthday cake with a homeless boy."

Daniel...

Age eleven.

"He cried because he accidentally broke his sister's toy."

Victoria...

Age fourteen.

"She sold her jewelry to pay a friend's hospital bill."

Emily...

Age six.

"She hugged me after my first business failure and said I was still her hero."

Emily's tears fell onto the pages.

When she reached the final entry...

Her hands began to shake.

It was written only six days before Richard died.

"I don't know where I lost them."

"Maybe I worked too much."

"Maybe I taught them to chase success..."

"...but forgot to teach them how to love each other."

"If they can become a family again..."

"they'll discover the greatest inheritance was never my money."

Emily closed the notebook.

At that exact moment...

Her phone rang.

Unknown number.

She answered.

A distorted voice whispered only seven words.

"Don't trust your brothers."

"They already opened the vault."

Then the call disconnected.

Emily looked at the four untouched keys in her purse.

That should have been impossible.

May you like

Unless...

Someone had been lying from the very beginning.
