CHAPTER 6 — The Heir Who Wanted Nothing

Samuel walked into the vault like a ghost entering his own grave.
Michael's face twisted with fear.
"How did you get in?"
Samuel looked at him.
"Your father gave me a key before he died."
Victoria began crying.
"I didn't know what Michael did."
Samuel nodded sadly.
"But you never asked."
Daniel lowered his head.
"We were afraid you'd take everything."
Samuel gave a small, painful smile.
"I never wanted everything."
He placed an envelope on the table.
"I only wanted to meet my father."
The room went silent.
Samuel explained how Richard had found him two years earlier.
How they had met secretly.
How Richard had apologized.
How they had started building a relationship too late.
Then Samuel revealed the final truth.
"Your father didn't leave the fortune to me."
Michael looked up.
"What?"
Samuel opened Richard's last letter.
Benjamin read it aloud.
"My fortune will go to whoever chooses family over money."
"Samuel already did."
"He refused every dollar I offered him."
"So now the choice belongs to my children."
The letter continued.
"If Michael, Daniel, Victoria, and Emily accept Samuel as their brother..."
"the estate will be divided equally among all five."
"But if even one of them refuses..."
"everything goes to charity."
Michael's jaw tightened.
Daniel looked at Victoria.
Victoria looked at Emily.
Emily walked forward first.
She hugged Samuel.
Not politely.
Not carefully.
Like she had been missing him her entire life.
"I'm sorry," she whispered.
Samuel closed his eyes.
For the first time...
He looked less like a stranger.
And more like family.
Then Daniel stepped forward.
Then Victoria.
Only Michael remained.
The man who wanted everything...
Now held the power to make everyone lose it.

And his answer would expose whether Richard Whitmore's children still had a family...
