Chapter 15 - Shadows of the PastTwo weeks passed in peaceful tranquility. The federal courts officially invalidated Arthur Sterling’s fraudulent property transfers, restoring the estate entirely to Thomas and his son’s legal trust.

Yet, healing a broken household took more than just clearing out corrupt lawyers.

Late one evening, Thomas found Clara sitting alone on the expansive marble back patio, staring out at the moonlit gardens. The cool night breeze rustled her hair, and her expression was distant, touched by a quiet melancholy.

Thomas walked out sliding glass doors, holding two mugs of hot cocoa. He handed one to her and sat quietly on the patio lounger beside her.

"You're miles away," Thomas said softly.

Clara wrapped her hands around the warm mug, staring into the dark liquid. "I was just thinking about my mother. And the farmhouse where I grew up." She smiled faintly, a bitter-sweet expression. "It’s strange, Thomas. For most of my life, I felt like a ghost—someone hiding in the background, watching rich people live in fairy tales while I scrubbed floors. Even now... sometimes I feel like I don't belong here."

Thomas’s heart ached. He reached across the small space, gently covering her hand with his.

"You aren't a ghost, Clara," Thomas said, his voice thick with emotion. "You are the very reason this house has a soul. Before you came here, I was the one living like a ghost—surrounded by money, dying of emptiness." He squeezed her hand gently. "You belong right here. With me. With Lucas."

Clara turned her head, her brown eyes locking with his. In the moonlight, the unspoken tension that had lingered between them for weeks finally crested like a tidal wave.

Clara leaned in slowly, closing the small distance between them.

Their lips met in a soft, tender kiss—a silent promise born from shared grief, fierce protection, and a love that had risen from the ashes of tragedy. It wasn't rushed or desperate; it was the gentle dawn after a very long, dark night.

When they finally pulled apart, a radiant, genuine smile lit up Clara's face.
