Chapter 2 - Ghosts of the Past

The collective gasp of the horrified guests scattered around the foyer finally pierced the thick tension in the room. Whispers erupted like wildfire.
“Was that Julian Vance?” “Did Eleanor just... push her?” “Oh my god, is the baby alright?”
Julian didn’t care about the crowd. His dark, piercing eyes searched Claire’s face frantically, his hands gently sliding from her shoulders to cup her face, checking for any sign of trauma. "Are you hurt? Did you hit your head?" he demanded, his voice thick with a raw emotion that defied the cold, untouchable reputation he held across the city's corporate empire.
"I... I think I'm okay," Claire whispered, her voice trembling as reality rushed back in. She looked down and realized the horrifying truth: she was sprawled across the chest of her billionaire ex-fiancé—the man who had walked away from her without a word three years ago, leaving her shattered heart in the wreckage of their broken engagement.
And now, he had just saved her life.
From the top of the sweeping marble staircase, a sharp, ragged breath drew every eye upward. Eleanor Vance stood frozen by the shattered balcony railing, her knuckles white, her face drained of all color. The cold, calculating fury that had possessed her moments before had vanished, replaced by a mask of sheer terror as she realized two things: Claire had survived, and Julian was the one holding her.
"Eleanor," Julian said. His voice dropped an octave, losing all warmth, turning into a tone so glacial and lethal that the murmuring crowd instantly fell dead silent. He shifted, carefully helping Claire to her feet while keeping one strong arm protectively around her waist.

"What," Julian enunciated slowly, every word dripping with lethal venom, "did you just try to do?"
