Chapter 5 - The Shredded Document

"You aren't going anywhere tonight," Julian said firmly, stepping in front of the door before she could reach the handle. "Outside those doors, Eleanor has already activated her legal team and allies. If you walk out of this mansion alone, you won't make it two miles before her people bury you—permanently."

Claire froze, knowing deep down that he was right. Eleanor Vance was a woman of terrifying power and absolute ruthlessness. The woman who had just tried to shove a pregnant woman off a balcony wouldn't hesitate to finish the job on a dark highway.

"Why did she do it, Julian?" Claire whispered, her voice cracking as the exhaustion finally caught up with her. "Why did Eleanor look at me with that much hatred? I was just trying to collect my things."

Julian sighed, running a hand through his dark hair as he paced the length of the room. He walked over to his mahogany desk, unlocked a heavy bottom drawer, and pulled out a thick, leather-bound book.

Claire’s breath hitched. Her mother’s journal.

"She didn't try to kill you just because of the past," Julian said grimly, placing the journal gently on the desk. "She tried to kill you because of what is written inside these pages. My father didn't die of a natural heart attack three years ago, Claire. And Eleanor didn't orchestrate it alone—she had help. Your mother discovered the truth, and that is why your family was destroyed."

Claire stared at the journal, then up at Julian, her mind reeling. "What... what are you talking about?"

Before Julian could answer, the security intercom on the wall crackled to life with a burst of static, followed by the frantic voice of the head of security.

“Mr. Vance! We have a massive breach! The local police are at the front gates, led by Chief Harrison—and they have an emergency warrant signed by a federal judge to search your private wing!”

Julian’s eyes narrowed into dangerous slits. "A federal warrant at midnight? They didn't come for an investigation." He looked straight at Claire. "They came to finish what Eleanor started."
