Chapter 7 - The Confession in the Dark

The sports car sped silently through the misty, winding backroads outside the city, far away from the flashing blue and red lights still surrounding the Vance mansion. Inside the cabin, the heater hummed softly, but the atmosphere was thick with unspoken tension.
Claire sat staring out the window, the leather-bound journal resting heavily in her lap. "You said your uncle Arthur helped Eleanor," she finally broke the silence, her voice hollow. "Why? Arthur was always the gentle uncle. He used to bring me flowers when I stayed at the mansion."
"A mask," Julian replied, his knuckles white as he kept his eyes glued to the dark asphalt ahead. "Arthur was drowning in gambling debts and embezzlement scandals within the family conglomerate. My father found out and threatened to cut him off permanently. So, Eleanor and Arthur made a pact."
He glanced sideways at Claire for a fraction of a second, his jaw clenched. "They poisoned my father slowly over six months. When your mother accidentally stumbled upon the medical records in my father's study, Eleanor staged the car crash that took your parents' lives. They thought they had burned every piece of evidence. But your mother hid her master journal in the estate's old wine cellar—the one place Eleanor never looked."
Claire felt a cold shiver crawl up her spine. The car crash that had supposedly taken her parents' lives hadn't been an accident at all. It was murder.
"And you?" Claire turned to face him fully, the dashboard light illuminating the pain in her eyes. "If you knew all of this, why did you push me away three years ago? Why did you leave me standing alone at the engagement party?"
Julian hit the brakes smoothly, pulling the car off onto a secluded wooded overlook that offered a panoramic view of the glittering city skyline below. He turned off the engine, plunging the car into silence.
He turned to her, his dark eyes shimmering with unshed tears. "Because Eleanor threatened your life, Claire. The night before our wedding, she came to my office with photographs of you walking down your street, and a syringe filled with a paralytic. She told me that if I didn't publicly humiliate you, break off the engagement, and pretend I never loved you, she would inject you in your sleep before you even woke up."
May you like
Claire gasped, her hand flying to her mouth as the horrifying puzzle pieces finally clicked into place. The sudden coldness, the cruel words he had thrown at her, the way he had refused to look her in the eye—it was all a desperate sacrifice to keep her alive.
"I chose to break your heart," Julian whispered, his voice cracking as a single tear escaped down his cheek, "so that you could keep beating."
