Chapter 3 - The Matriarch's Defense

"Julian... my darling, listen to me," Eleanor stammered, her voice uncharacteristically shaking as she hurried down the stairs, her expensive silk gown rustling against the marble steps. She reached the bottom, her eyes darting nervously between her stepson and Claire, desperately trying to mask her panic behind a veneer of maternal concern. "It was an accident! The railing... the railing gave way! She lost her balance!"

"A lie," Claire spat, her voice suddenly regaining its fierce edge as adrenaline coursed through her veins. She stepped out from under Julian's arm, standing tall despite her trembling knees. She pointed a shaking finger at the older woman. "You pushed me, Eleanor. You looked right into my eyes, and you shoved me with both hands. You tried to kill me—and my child."

The word child hung in the air like a detonation.

The crowd erupted into fresh gasps. Heads turned, eyes darted from Claire’s swollen stomach to Julian’s stunned face.

Eleanor’s face flushed crimson, her mask of innocence slipping entirely. "You ungrateful little liar!" she snapped, venom dripping from her tongue. "You sneak into my home, refuse to leave your vulgar demands, and now you fabricate a psychotic story to ruin this family's reputation? You were always unstable, Claire—just like your good-for-nothing mother!"

"Enough!"

Julian’s roar shook the crystal pendants of the chandelier overhead. The sheer authority in his voice silenced everyone instantly. He stepped between Eleanor and Claire, his tall frame blocking the older woman entirely.

"Security," Julian said coldly, not taking his eyes off his stepmother. Within seconds, two burly men in sharp black suits materialized from the perimeter of the room. "Escort Mrs. Vance to her private quarters. Lock the doors from the outside. No one enters or leaves until I say so."

"Julian! You cannot do this to me! I am your mother!" Eleanor shrieked as the guards stepped forward, firmly gripping her arms and hauling her backward toward the service elevators despite her frantic thrashing and screaming.

Julian didn't even blink. He turned his attention back to Claire, his expression softening instantly as he looked at her. "Can you walk?" he asked softly. "We need to get you to a hospital right now."
