Chapter 6 - The Midnight Raid

"They're coming up the private stairwell!" the intercom squawked again, abruptly cut off by a harsh burst of feedback.

Julian didn't hesitate. He grabbed the leather journal from the desk, shoved it into Claire's hands, and grabbed her wrist with an iron grip. "Move! Now!"

"Where are we going? They have a warrant!" Claire protested, jogging to keep up with his long strides as he pulled her toward a concealed panel hidden behind a row of heavy bookshelves in the corner of the suite.

"That warrant is forged or bought," Julian said grimly, pressing a hidden brass latch. The heavy wooden bookcase clicked and swung inward, revealing a dark, narrow stone passageway descending into the bowels of the mansion. "Eleanor has half the city's judiciary in her pocket. If they catch you here with that journal, they will lock you away and make you vanish."

They slipped into the secret passage just as a series of heavy, deafening thuds echoed against the outer mahogany door of the suite.

“Open the door! Police department! Execute search warrant!” a gruff voice echoed through the bedroom.

As the outer door splintered open under the force of a battering ram, Julian pulled the hidden bookshelf shut from the inside, plunging them into absolute darkness, save for a faint sliver of light filtering through the stone cracks.

"Hold onto my jacket," Julian whispered close to her ear, his breath warm against her cheek in the cramped space.

Claire clutched her mother's journal to her chest with one hand, her other hand gripping the fabric of Julian's jacket as they navigated the ancient, winding stone stairs downward. Her heart hammered against her ribs. Every instinct warned her that trusting Julian was dangerous—he was a Vance, after all, born of the same toxic bloodline as Eleanor. But as he guided her steadily through the dark, shielding her body with his own, she realized she had no other choice.

After what felt like miles of descending beneath the earth, the narrow tunnel opened up into a subterranean garage lit by a single dim overhead bulb. A sleek, matte-black sports car sat parked in the shadows.

Julian unlocked the vehicle with a remote on his keychain, opening the passenger door for her. "Get in."

Claire hesitated, her hand on the door frame. "Julian... where does this road lead?"

"Straight to the truth," Julian said, his dark eyes locking onto hers with a fierce intensity that brooked no argument. "And straight to the person who helped Eleanor frame me three years ago—my uncle, Arthur Vance."
