Chapter 13 - The Shadow PartnerThe realization hung in the air like poison smoke.

If Elena's relocation to Connecticut, her lawyer's loophole, and the timing of her arrival at Marrow Holdings had been orchestrated, then she wasn't just a runaway wife seeking refuge—she was a pawn in a game decades in the making.

"Who?" Elena asked, tears of frustration and fear springing to her eyes. "Who could possibly orchestrate something like that? Even my own grandfather didn't have that kind of reach!"

"Not your grandfather," a voice echoed smoothly from the doorway.

Tobias and Elena whipped around.

Leaning casually against the doorframe was Victoria Vance—not looking like the frantic, captive counsel of a year ago, but wearing an immaculate charcoal pantsuit, a calm, chilling smile playing on her lips. In her hand, she held a secure tablet displaying the live override codes to the penthouse's security grid.

Tobias moved instinctively, placing himself directly between Victoria and Elena, his hand sliding toward the hidden panic alarm beneath the desk.

"Don't bother, Tobias," Victoria said smoothly, tapping her tablet. "The alarms are routed to a loop. Your security team downstairs is currently locked out by biometric re-indexing. You're completely isolated."

"Victoria," Tobias said, his voice a low, lethal growl. "You were vetted. Your family was threatened by the Vances."

"My family is the Vances, Tobias," Victoria corrected with a polite tilt of her head. "Or rather, the executive branch that didn't agree with my grandfather's crude methods. He was a blunt instrument. He wanted to destroy Marrow Holdings with brute force. I prefer architecture."

Elena stared at her former ally, horror etched across her features. "You... you helped me find that house in Connecticut. You whispered the name of that lawyer in my ear when I was desperate!"

"I gave you a safe cage, Elena," Victoria smiled warmly, as if discussing a favor among friends. "I needed you to raise those boys away from the noise, keep their genetic profile pristine, and bring them right back to Tobias's doorstep when the timing was mathematically perfect."

"Why?" Tobias demanded, stepping forward, his presence towering and formidable despite the trap. "What do you want with my sons?"

Victoria’s smile faded, replaced by an expression of cold, clinical ambition. "I don't want your sons, Tobias. I want your empire. And under New York state law, a consolidated family trust with twin heirs holds absolute voting power over Marrow Holdings' underlying charter. The moment you legally re-married or formally claimed them in full custody, the Aegis charter activated. Congratulations, Tobias. You just signed over fifty-one percent of your life's work to my syndicate."
