Chapter 4 - The Golden CageBy 7:00 PM, the executive floor of Marrow Holdings looked less like a corporate headquarters and more like an upscale nursery mixed with a war room.

Victoria Vance had returned an hour earlier with a thick manila folder, her expression tight and professional. She had placed it on the side table before whispering the preliminary findings to Tobias: Elena had lived a remarkably quiet, middle-class life in a modest coastal town in Connecticut, working remotely as a freelance architectural consultant. No massive debts, no mysterious benefactors, and no other men. She had done it entirely on her own terms.
Now, Elena sat rigidly in the corner armchair, watching as Tobias—billionaire titan of industry—sat cross-legged on the Persian rug, attempting to construct a makeshift tower out of expensive legal briefs and spare paperclips for Leo and Julian.
"You're spoiling them," Elena murmured coldly, though there was exhaustion in her voice.
"I'm establishing a baseline," Tobias replied without looking up, carefully balancing a paperclip structure while Leo watched with wide-eyed fascination. "Tomorrow morning, my security team will secure the Connecticut property. A private security detail will be stationed at your residence twenty-four hours a day."
Elena’s head snapped up. "Like hell they will! I didn't come here to become a prisoner in my own home, Tobias!"
"You're not a prisoner," Tobias said calmly, finally looking up at her. "You're the mother of my sons. And given that you managed to hide them from me for nearly three years, I'm not leaving their safety to chance. People know who I am, Elena. If word gets out that Tobias Marrow has twin heirs, every tabloid, hostile investor, and corporate rival will be hunting for them. Protection isn't a suggestion; it's a non-negotiable condition."
"You make it sound like a hostage negotiation," she whispered, her green eyes shimmering with unshed tears.
"It's survival," Tobias countered, standing up and dusting off his knees. He walked over to her, stopping just short of invading her personal space. "We need to talk about what happens next. The unsigned divorce papers are sitting on my desk. We can rip them up right now, or we can rewrite them into a custody arrangement that will take months of litigation. But make no mistake—I am not letting you take my boys back to Connecticut without me."
Elena stared at him, the weight of the past three years pressing down on both of them. "You think you can just step back into our lives like a CEO taking over a struggling subsidiary? You think a few security guards and a handful of toys fixes what you broke?"
"No," Tobias said, his voice dropping, raw and unshielded for the first time in years. "It doesn't fix anything. But it's a start. Because whether you like it or not, Elena, we are tied together now. Permanently."
Suddenly, the heavy oak doors of the office swung open.
Victoria Vance walked in, looking graver than Tobias had ever seen her. She held a single sheet of printed paper, her eyes darting nervously toward Elena before focusing entirely on Tobias.
"Mr. Marrow," Victoria said quietly. "You need to see this. The property loophole Mrs. Marrow’s lawyer found... it wasn't a mistake in our original filing."
Tobias frowned, his instincts instantly flaring. "What are you talking about?"
"It wasn't filed by a local real estate attorney," Victoria continued, her voice tight. "The legal paperwork was routed through an offshore shell corporation registered in the Cayman Islands. The same corporation that bought a controlling stake in Marrow Holdings’ primary debt portfolio three days ago."
Tobias froze. The room suddenly felt suffocating.
Elena went completely pale, gripping the arms of her chair so hard her knuckles turned white.
May you like
"Who?" Tobias demanded, his voice dropping into a lethal whisper. "Who bought our debt?"
Victoria swallowed hard. "A rival firm, sir. Headed by Julian Vance’s estate—your wife's estranged grandfather. The man who disowned her when she married you."
