Chapter 1 - The Code Blue and the Escape AttemptThe rhythmic, piercing shriek of the heart monitor felt like nails driven straight into my skull.

“V-fib! She’s going into ventricular fibrillation!” Dr. Patel shouted, his hands instantly locking over Sophie’s chest, initiating brutal, rhythmic chest compressions. “Charge the defibrillator to one hundred fifty joules! Clear!”
A jolt of electricity surged through Sophie’s fragile body, causing her to arch slightly before falling limp again.
Across the room, security guards had Daniel pinned against the reinforced glass of the trauma bay. His face was a mask of calculated fury, his eyes darting frantically toward the exit doors as the reality of his trapped situation set in. He realized the game was up, but men like Daniel never go down quietly—they burn the house down on their way out.
“Let me go, you idiots!” Daniel roared, lunging forward with a burst of adrenaline that caught one of the junior guards off guard. He wrenched his arm free, his elbow catching the guard square in the jaw.
“Code silver in Trauma Bay Three! Security assistance required!” I shouted into the wall intercom, never taking my eyes off Dr. Patel’s hands as he worked frantically to revive my daughter.
Daniel bolted toward the sliding automatic doors just as they began to seal shut. He managed to jam his shoulder through the gap, forcing the doors apart with a mechanical screech.
“Stop him!” I commanded.
Two heavyweight security officers tackled Daniel to the linoleum floor, sending medical trays crashing down in a clatter of stainless steel. Daniel thrashed wildly, screaming obscenities, but the heavy zip-ties clicked tightly around his wrists.
“Mara, you psychotic bitch!” Daniel screamed, spittle flying from his lips as he was hauled to his feet. “You set me up! This is a malicious fabrication! I’ll sue this hospital into the ground, and I’ll make sure you never practice medicine again!”
“Take him to the secure holding office downstairs and lock the doors,” I said coldly, my voice devoid of emotion, though my heart was hammering against my ribs like a trapped bird. “Confiscate his phone, his belt, and anything else he has on him. Do not let anyone near him—not a lawyer, not a colleague, no one—until the state police arrive.”
“Copy that, Dr. Vance,” the lead security officer replied, dragging Daniel out into the hallway as his curses echoed down the sterile corridor.
I turned back to the bed.
“Come on, sweetheart. Stay with me,” I whispered, gripping Sophie’s cold, small hand.
Dr. Patel pressed his stethoscope to her chest. A tense, agonizing second ticked by.

“I’ve got a sinus rhythm,” Dr. Patel exhaled, wiping a bead of sweat from his forehead. “Her pulse is weak, but she’s back. Blood pressure is stabilizing. We need to rush her to emergency surgery immediately. Internal bleeding from the fall... or worse, from the impact of the beating.”
“Do it,” I said. “I’m scrubbing in with you.”
