Chapter 1 - The Touch of GraceRico’s hand froze a millimeter from his holster, his cold blue eyes locking onto the young waitress standing unfazed before the most feared table in Brooklyn. Clara didn't shrink back. She didn't drop her gaze. Instead, she slowly knelt down on the cold marble floor until she was eye-level with the trembling, screaming three-year-old.

"Leo," Clara whispered. Her voice wasn't loud, but it cut through the din of his wails like a blade of warm light. "It's too loud in here, little man. I know. The giants are making too much noise."
Leo’s screams hitched. He blinked through red, swollen eyes, his tiny chest heaving as he stared at her.
Clara didn't force him. She didn't try to grab his hands or hoist him up like Dante had. She simply extended the glass of warm milk, holding it gently with both hands. "I put a little sugar in it. Just the way you like it when the thunder scares you."
The entire restaurant held its breath. Dante gripped the handle of his weapon, ready to neutralize what he perceived as a threat. Marco closed his eyes, silently praying for a quick end. Rico watched, every muscle in his frame coiled like a spring, ready to shatter anyone who harmed his son.
Slowly, agonizingly, Leo stopped crying. His lower lip quivered. He reached out a small, trembling hand.
He didn't take the glass.
Instead, Leo’s sticky, tear-streaked fingers reached out and gripped the edge of Clara’s plain white apron, pulling himself forward until his wet face pressed directly into the hollow of her shoulder. He buried himself against her, sobbing quietly now—not a rage-filled scream, but the heartbreaking whimper of a child who had lost his entire world.
Rico’s breath caught in his throat. In his brutal underworld, weakness was fatal, and touch was a weapon. Yet here was his son—a boy who hadn't let anyone touch him since the night Elena died—clinging to an unknown waitress as if she were a lifeline dropped from heaven.
"Who the hell are you?" Rico finally spoke, his voice dangerously low, vibrating with a mix of shock and intense, protective fury.
Clara rested one hand lightly on Leo’s back, rubbing small, rhythmic circles into his spine. She finally raised her eyes to meet the terrifying gaze of the Butcher of Brooklyn.
"My name is Clara, Mr. Moretti," she said steadily, her voice calm despite the violent pounding of her heart. "And your son is starving for something money can't buy."
Before Rico could process her words, Leo lifted his head from her shoulder. His eyes were wide, and with a sudden, deliberate motion, he reached out his small hand and placed his palm flat against Rico’s cold, hard cheek—smearing a streak of chocolate cake and tears across the mafia boss's immaculate skin.

The room gasped. Marco nearly fainted. No one—not rival capos, not police captains, not even his own deceased wife in moments of exhaustion—ever dared touch Rico Moretti's face like that.
Rico sat completely paralyzed. He stared at his son, then up at Clara, as a profound, terrifying shift occurred beneath the glittering crystal chandelier of Il Destino.
