Chapter 5 - The Vance Family SecretI strode down the brightly lit hospital corridor toward the private consultation room, my white lab coat billowing behind me like a cape of retribution. I didn't knock; I simply shoved the glass door open with enough force to make it bang against the drywall.

Inside sat a tall, impeccably tailored man in an expensive charcoal suit. Julian Vance. He looked chillingly like Daniel—same sharp jawline, same predatory smirk—only older, harder, and infinitely more dangerous. Sitting beside him was a nervous-looking local attorney clutching a briefcase.

“Dr. Mara Vance, I presume?” Julian said smoothly, not even bothering to stand up. He crossed one polished leather shoe over the other. “My brother tells me you’re letting a momentary domestic dispute get completely out of hand.”

“A domestic dispute?” I repeated, my voice dropping an octave as I planted both hands flat on the mahogany table, leaning directly into his personal space. “Your brother systematically tortured a thirteen-year-old child for three years. He broke her ribs, bruised her flesh with a belt buckle, and locked her in a closet. That isn't a dispute, Mr. Vance. That’s a felony.”

Julian let out a soft, condescending chuckle, adjusting his gold-rimmed cufflinks.

“Let’s be realistic, Doctor. Courts are messy. Juries are unpredictable. And powerful people have ways of making inconvenient truths disappear,” Julian said, sliding the manila envelope toward me with his index finger. “Inside this envelope are draft filings from the state medical board accusing you of negligence, HIPAA violations, and prescription fraud. We can file them tomorrow morning, or we can settle this quietly. Daniel signs over his parental rights, you drop the criminal complaint, and we issue a joint statement that Sophie’s injuries were the result of a tragic accidental fall.”

I looked down at the envelope, then slowly raised my gaze to meet Julian’s cold, dead eyes.

“You really think you’re the first predator who tried to threaten me?” I asked softly.

Julian’s smirk faltered for a fraction of a second. “Excuse me?”

“Did Daniel ever tell you why I became a doctor?” I asked, walking around the table until I stood right beside his chair. “Did he ever tell you about my younger sister before she passed away? About the system that looked the other way because powerful men bought their silence?”

Julian’s posture stiffened. For the first time, genuine uncertainty flickered across his face.

“You’re bluffing,” Julian muttered.

“Am I?” I reached into my pocket and pulled out my smartphone, tapping the screen to play an audio file at maximum volume.

Instantly, Julian’s own voice filled the consultation room:

“...just file the false board complaints, Julian. Make sure her hospital gets audited to death. I don’t care if we have to bribe half the state inspectors; Mara is not putting me in prison...”

Julian shot out of his chair as if he had been struck by lightning, his face turning an ash-gray color.

“Where... where did you get that?!” Julian hissed, grabbing the edge of the table.

“While you were sitting in my hospital trying to intimidate me, my legal team was busy subpoenaing your firm’s encrypted cloud server via an emergency federal warrant,” I replied with a razor-sharp smile. “You see, Julian? Your brother isn't the only one who leaves digital fingerprints. And conspiracy to obstruct justice carries a much longer prison sentence than simple assault.”

Julian stared at me, realizing he had just walked headfirst into a calculated trap.

“You’re insane,” Julian whispered, grabbing his briefcase and backing toward the door.

“Tell Daniel I said hello when you visit him in holding,” I called out as he practically bolted from the room. “Tell him trial starts in three weeks.”
