Chapter 12 - The Ghost in the SystemTwo weeks of peaceful silence followed. Sophie returned to school, her laughter echoing down the hallways that had once known only tension and fear. I resumed my duties as Chief Medical Officer at St. Catherine’s, implementing a mandatory, rigorous child-protection training program for every nurse, doctor, and administrator on staff.

We were healing. But corporate syndicates don't surrender easily—they simply change tactics.

It happened on a rainy Tuesday night. I was working late in my administrative office, reviewing the hospital’s quarterly budget allocations, when my desktop computer suddenly flickered.

The screen went pitch black.

A single line of green text materialized letter by letter, mimicking an old-school command-line interface:

[ACCESS GRANTED: ROOT_USER] [WARNING: SECURE MEDICAL DATABASE COMPROMISED] [FILES ENCRYPTED: 1,420 RECORDS]

“What on earth...?” I muttered, grabbing my desk phone to call IT security.

Before I could dial, the hospital-wide intercom system clicked on with a sharp, piercing static squeal. But it wasn't playing the usual emergency tone.

Instead, a cold, distorted digital voice echoed through the empty sterile corridors of St. Catherine’s:

“Dr. Mara Vance... you thought you won the game by cutting off the branch. But the roots run deeper than you ever imagined. Check your private email.”

My heart hammered against my ribs. I grabbed my smartphone, unlocked it with a trembling thumb, and opened my encrypted mail app.

A single new message sat in my inbox from an anonymous sender. Inside was a video file labeled [SOPHIE_FINAL_WARNING.mp4].

My blood froze. I tapped play.

The video showed grainy, high-definition surveillance footage of Sophie walking home from her middle school bus stop just three hours earlier. A dark van pulled up alongside her, and a masked figure stepped out, grabbing her backpack strap before Sophie spun around, pepper-sprayed the assailant in the face, and sprinted toward a nearby neighborhood coffee shop.

The screen cut to black, followed by a chilling text overlay:

“She fought back this time. Next time, she won’t be so lucky. Drop the civil lawsuit against the real estate syndicate by Friday, or the next video won’t be a near-miss.”
