On a bright, sunny Saturday morning six months after the trial, Sophie and I stood on the back patio of our suburban home, hosting a small celebratory barbecue for our closest friends, Dr. Patel, and Detective Miller.
Sophie was laughing as she tossed a frisbee across the lush green lawn, her hair catching the golden afternoon sunlight. The shadows of her past had finally faded into distant memory, replaced by the vibrant, unstoppable energy of a thriving thirteen-year-old girl who knew she was deeply, fiercely loved.
I stood by the patio table, pouring a glass of lemonade, when Detective Miller walked over and leaned against the wooden railing.
“You know, Dr. Vance,” Miller said with a warm smile, raising his cup toward me. “In my twenty years on the force, I’ve never seen anyone take down two criminal syndicates and a corrupt hospital board in less than a year.”
“I didn't do it alone, Detective,” I replied, clinking my glass against his. “I had the best motivation in the world.”
Miller glanced across the lawn toward Sophie, who waved brightly at us with a beaming smile.
