CHAP 10: THE VANISHING EVIDENCE

💥 HIGH-SECURITY CONVOY AMBUSHED! DOCTOR THORNE VANISHES INTO THIN AIR!

Sirens wailed in the distance as Marcus immediately called FBI Special Agent David Chen. "Chen! Get a signal jammer to the Sterling safehouse right now! Liam has an active subdermal beacon implanted in his wrist!"

"Marcus, listen to me very carefully," Chen’s voice came through the speaker, devoid of its usual calm authority. His tone was laced with raw panic. "Forget the beacon. Get Julia and the kids out of that house immediately!"

"What are you talking about?" Marcus demanded, securing Julia and the twins behind him.

"The prisoner transport carrying Dr. Raymond Thorne to the federal courthouse... it was hit ten minutes ago on the Suspension Bridge," Chen whispered. "A military-grade EMP device disabled the transport convoy. High-caliber sniper fire eliminated all six federal escorts in under thirty seconds."

Marcus felt the blood drain from his face. "Did they kill Thorne?"

"No," Chen replied grimly. "They cut him out of his handcuffs and pulled him into a black, unmarked helicopter. But that’s not the worst part, Marcus. Before the shooters vanished, they left a message painted on the hood of my command vehicle."

"What message?"

"PROJECT NEXUS IS STILL ACTIVE."

Marcus ended the call and turned to Julia. "We are leaving. Right now."

Julia didn't ask questions. She grabbed both Leo and Liam, wrapping them in thick coats. They bolted out the rear door toward Marcus's unmarked SUV. But as Marcus key-fobbed the doors unlocked, the headlights of three black armored SUVs flickered to life in the tree line surrounding the property.

Heavy boots crunched on the gravel driveway. Men dressed in matte-black tactical gear, bearing no insignia, stepped into the light. Their weapons were fitted with heavy suppressors.

"Detective Vance," the lead operator said, his voice amplified through a tactical helmet speaker. "Hand over the twins, and you and the woman walk away alive. Refuse, and this property becomes a mass grave."

Marcus drew his sidearm, pulling Julia behind the vehicle's engine block. "Who do you work for?!" Marcus yelled into the darkness.

The lead operator smiled beneath his visor. "We work for the people who bought this city forty years ago."
