CHAP 2: THE VOICEMAIL FROM BEYOND THE GRAVE

šŸ’„ THE PHONE RANG AT 3:00 AM WITH A MESSAGE THAT CHILLED THEM TO THE BONE!

The silence inside Detective Marcus Vance’s office was deafening. Julia Sterling remained on her knees, tears streaming down her pale face, while her husband, Arthur Sterling, stood behind her, his posture rigid, his knuckles white as he clenched his fists.

"That record is wrong!" Julia cried out, her voice echoing off the concrete walls. "Look at him, Detective! Look at his eyes! Look at the crescent-shaped birthmark right under his left collarbone! That is my baby!"

Marcus stepped closer and gently pulled back the collar of the boy's oversized hoodie. Right below the boy's left collarbone was a distinct, dark crescent birthmark. Exactly as described in the old birth registry.

"How is this possible?" Marcus demanded, turning his piercing gaze toward Arthur Sterling. "Mr. Sterling, if your son died in a nursery fire two years ago, why is he sitting in my precinct right now?"

Arthur swallowed hard, adjusting his tie. "I... I don't know, Detective. The hospital told us the fire engulfed the entire east wing of Saint Jude’s Children's Facility. They told us... they told us there were no survivors. They gave us an urn with his ashes!"

"We held a funeral!" Julia sobbed, clutching the toddler, who buried his tiny head into her neck. "We buried an empty urn..."

"Or you buried someone else's child," Marcus said coldly.

Before anyone could reply, the emergency line on Marcus’s desk rang violently. The sharp ring made everyone jump. Marcus grabbed the receiver.

"Vance here."

"Detective..." a distorted, digitized voice rasped through the speaker. "You think you found a missing boy. You think you’re playing hero."

Marcus instantly hit the recording button on his desk and signaled to Officer Jenkins to trace the call. "Who is this? What do you know about Leo Sterling?"

"If you want that child to stay alive tonight, stop looking at his birth certificate," the distorted voice hissed. "Go to the Saint Jude Memorial Park. Open the Sterling family vault. Look at what’s inside the urn. And if you tell Chief Miller... the boy dies."

CLICK.

The line went dead.

Marcus turned to Jenkins, who shook her head in frustration. "Rerouted through seven foreign proxies. Totally untraceable."

Marcus turned to the couple. "Mr. Sterling... why would the caller tell me not to inform Chief Miller?"

Arthur looked bewildered, but Julia’s eyes widened with sudden terror. "Chief Miller was the lead investigator on the nursery fire two years ago," she whispered. "He was the one who signed the death certificate."

Marcus felt a chill run down his spine. The conspiracy was no longer just about a lost child on a highway. It went straight to the top of his own police department.
