CHAP 4: THE THREE WORDS THAT BROKE THE DETECTIVE

đŸ’„ THE BOY FINALLY OPENED HIS MOUTH AND SPOKE THREE TERRIFYING WORDS!

The heavy iron doors of the mausoleum locked with a sickening mechanical thud. The lights inside flickered and died, plunging the room into total darkness.

"Marcus!" Julia screamed, pulling Leo close as the sound of heavy footsteps echoed outside the stone structure.

"Stay behind me!" Marcus barked, drawing his 9mm sidearm and flicking on his tactical weapon light. He stepped toward the iron door, pushing his shoulder against it. It was locked from the outside.

Suddenly, a thick, sweet-smelling smoke began pouring into the room through the ventilation grates near the ceiling.

"Chemical agent!" Marcus yelled. "Cover your mouths! Julia, cover Leo's face!"

Julia pulled her jacket over the toddler, coughing as the thick white smoke invaded her lungs. Panic set in as the air quickly became unbreathable. Marcus raised his weapon, lined up the shot with the heavy padlock holding the doors from the outside, and fired three rapid shots.

BANG! BANG! BANG!

Sparks flew. Marcus kicked the doors with all his strength. The shattered lock gave way, and the heavy iron doors swung open into the night.

Marcus dragged Julia and Arthur out into the fresh night air. They collapsed onto the grass, gasping for breath. Marcus scanned the surrounding tree line with his weapon raised, but whoever had locked them in was gone into the shadows.

As they sat on the damp grass, coughing, the little boy—who had remained completely silent since being found on the highway—gently pulled down Julia's collar.

His eyes were wide with fear, reflecting the moonlight. He looked directly into Marcus’s eyes.

For the first time, the toddler opened his mouth. His voice was faint, raspy, and trembling with trauma.

"Under... the... road," the boy whispered.

Marcus froze, dropping to his knees beside the child. "What did you say, buddy? Speak to me. What’s under the road?"

Leo pointed his tiny, bruised finger toward the distant roar of the Interstate 95 highway.

"Under the road..." Leo repeated, his eyes filling with fresh tears. "Many... babies... screaming."

Julia let out a horror-stricken sob, pulling her son into a desperate embrace. Marcus’s chest tightened as the horrifying realization hit him like a freight train.

Leo hadn't wandered away from a house. He hadn't been dumped by a car.

He had crawled out from an underground facility hidden beneath the highway itself.
