CHAP 6: INTO THE SHADOWS OF THE HIGHWAY

đŸ’„ THE HIDDEN DOOR BENEATH THE BRIDGE WAS NEVER MEANT TO BE OPENED!

Sirens blared in the distance as Marcus sprinted out the rear exit of Police Headquarters. He knew he had minutes before the entire department was locked down and he was framed for Chief Miller’s murder.

He jumped into his unmarked cruiser, hit the gas, and sped toward his countryside safehouse.

Twenty minutes later, Marcus slammed the doors of the safehouse open. Julia was standing near the window, holding a heavy iron frying pan, her eyes wide with terror.

"Marcus! What happened?! We heard news reports—they’re saying you killed the Chief!"

"I was framed," Marcus said breathlessly, grabbing extra ammunition magazines and a tactical shotgun from his hidden gun safe. "Miller was killed by a sniper before he could tell me everything. But he gave me the last piece of the puzzle."

Marcus turned to Arthur Sterling, who was standing quietly near the fireplace, avoiding eye contact.

"Miller said the money behind Ravenhill came from someone close to you, Arthur," Marcus said, advancing on the businessman. "What aren't you telling us?"

"I don't know what you're talking about!" Arthur shouted, backing away. "I’m a victim here! My son was stolen!"

"Arthur..." Julia whispered, looking at her husband with sudden realization and terror. "Two years ago... before the fire... you made a ten-million-dollar wire transfer from our private family trust. You told me it was an investment in medical research for your rare blood disease..."

Arthur’s face crumpled. He sank into a chair, burying his face in his hands.

"I didn't know they were going to fake his death!" Arthur wept bitterly. "I had a terminal rare bone marrow disease! The doctors at Ravenhill told me they could save my life using specialized stem cells—cells that could only be harvested from a genetically identical child!"

"You... you sacrificed our son to save yourself?!" Julia screamed, slapping her husband across the face with devastating force. "You monster!"

"They told me he wouldn't be hurt!" Arthur sobbed. "They said they would keep him in a state-of-the-art subterranean facility until the harvest was complete, and then send him to an overseas adoption home! I didn't know they were keeping him underground like an animal!"

Marcus grabbed Arthur by the collar and dragged him to his feet. "You're going to show me where the entrance to that facility is right now. Or I swear to God, I’ll leave you to the snipers."
