Chapter 10 - Proof They Were Here

Later that night, long after the guests had departed and the champagne flutes had been cleared away, Dante and Grace walked out onto the newly rebuilt east wing balcony.

The Chicago night air was crisp, carrying the distant hum of the city lights reflecting off Lake Michigan.

Grace wrapped a cashmere shawl tightly around her shoulders, leaning against the stone balustrade. Dante stepped up behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist and resting his chin softly on her shoulder.

“Penny for your thoughts?” he murmured against her ear.

Grace looked out over the sprawling estate, the gardens bathed in soft moonlight, the charred ruins of the past completely gone, replaced by new foundations and growing trees.

“I was thinking about my grandfather’s old philosophy,” Grace said softly. “He used to say that a good life isn't measured by how much space you take up, or how many rooms you conquer.”

Dante tightened his embrace, listening intently.

“What is it measured by, then?” he asked.

Grace turned around in his arms, looking up into his dark, steady eyes with a serene, beautiful smile.

“Proof that you were here,” she whispered. “Proof that you loved deeply, fought bravely, and left the world a little warmer than you found it.”

Dante smiled, leaning down to press a tender, lingering kiss against her lips.
