Chapter 18 - The Masterpiece

Five years later, the Moretti-Bennett Foundation was a nationally recognized organization, funding community kitchens, educational grants, and historical restorations across three states.
The estate in Chicago was no longer a fortress; it was a vibrant community hub where artists, students, and families gathered every weekend.
One quiet Sunday evening, Dante and Grace sat on the balcony of their penthouse apartment overlooking the Columbus skyline.
Grace held a steaming mug of black coffee, her shoulders relaxed against the wooden railing. Dante sat beside her, resting his arm along the back of the bench.
“You know,” Dante said, breaking the silence, “if someone had told me ten years ago that I’d be living in Ohio, running a bakery chain, and managing community art projects, I would have had them institutionalized.”
Grace laughed, leaning her head against his shoulder. “And if someone had told me I’d marry a billionaire corporate titan who actually knows how to mop a floor, I would have told them to check their medication.”
They both smiled, looking out at the city lights reflecting off the pavement below.
They had survived betrayal, arson, false accusations, and the crushing weight of family expectations. They had stripped away everything false until only the truth remained.
“Do you ever think about the old days?” Grace asked softly. “The mansion? The chandeliers?”
Dante looked down at his left hand, where the simple platinum and malachite ring caught the evening light.
“Only when I need to remind myself how far we’ve come,” he answered honestly. “We didn't just survive that fire, Grace. We used the ashes to build something real.”
Grace turned in his arms, pressing a soft kiss to his cheek.

“Proof we were here,” she whispered.
“Proof we were here,” Dante agreed, tightening his embrace as the night wind swept past them, carrying the sweet, comforting scent of vanilla and baking bread from the streets below.
