Chapter 13 - The Verdict

The jury deliberated for less than three hours.

When the foreman stood to read the verdict, the courtroom fell into a heavy, suffocating silence.

“On all counts—including federal wire fraud, attempted arson, malicious destruction of property, and subornation of perjury—the jury finds the defendant, Vanessa Laurent, guilty.”

A collective intake of breath swept through the gallery.

Vanessa closed her eyes, her shoulders slumping as the reality of a fifteen-year federal prison sentence without parole finally settled over her.

Judge Henderson didn't mince words during sentencing. He spoke of the gross abuse of privilege, the calculated endangerment of an elderly woman’s life, and the malicious framing of an innocent worker. When the gavel finally struck for the last time, it signaled the absolute end of an era.

As Dante and Grace stepped back out onto the courthouse steps, the autumn wind caught their coats.

A reporter thrust a microphone forward. “Mr. Moretti! Do you have a statement regarding the verdict?”

Dante stopped, looking down at Grace for a brief second before turning to face the cameras.

“Justice was served today,” Dante said, his voice steady and resonant. “Not just for my family, but for anyone who has ever been judged by their background, their status, or their appearance. The Moretti name no longer stands for exclusion. It stands for accountability.”

That evening, back at the estate, there were no grand parties, no champagne flutes, and no hollow celebrations. Just a quiet dinner in the newly renovated kitchen, with Elena, Dante, and Grace sharing a simple, homemade peach cobbler baked in the very ovens Grace had helped design.

The past was officially closed.
