Chapter 3 - The Broken Altar

The heavy oak door of Elena’s suite burst open. Dante charged through the smoke, expecting the worst.
Instead, he found Grace Bennett shielding his mother with her own body.
The realization hit Dante like a physical blow. Grace hadn't stolen the necklace. She hadn't run away. When the house was burning, she had run toward the fire to save the woman who had just doubted her integrity.
Gently, Dante pulled the heavy beam off Grace’s back. She groaned softly, her soot-covered face turned toward the floor, her breathing shallow.
“Mother!” Dante cried, scooping Elena into his arms.
Elena clutched something tightly in her trembling fist. She opened her hand as Dante carried her toward the clear air of the courtyard.
Diamonds. An emerald. The Moretti necklace.
“She... she didn't steal it,” Elena whispered, coughing into a clean handkerchief. “She found it... in Vanessa’s dressing room... dropped behind the safe.”
Dante froze. The world seemed to tilt on its axis.
Vanessa had planted the empty box in Grace’s cart while simultaneously hiding the real necklace in Grace’s possession? No—Vanessa had hidden the necklace in her own room, panicked when Elena noticed it missing, and framed Grace to cover her tracks.
The shame that cracked beneath Dante’s ribs turned into a cold, lethal fury.
Paramedics arrived within minutes, loading Grace onto a stretcher while oxygen masks were placed over her face. As they wheeled her past Dante, he reached out and caught the edge of the blanket.
“Grace,” he started, his voice cracking.
She didn't look at him. Her eyes were closed, her expression carved from stone and exhaustion. She pulled her hand away, letting the blanket slip from his fingers.
Dante stood alone in the smoking courtyard, watching the ambulance disappear down the winding driveway.
For thirty years, he had believed that wealth, status, and power made a person untouchable.
