Chapter 1 - THE SHADOW IN THE BLUE ROOMAleandro’s heart missed a single, heavy beat—not out of grief, but out of a razor-sharp realization that the foundation of his entire world had just cracked.

For two years, Isabella Romano had been the architecture of his emotional survival. When his brother was buried, when the dock war of '24 had stained his hands in iron and copper, Isabella had been the quiet warmth waiting behind the heavy oak doors of his estate. She knew his silences. She knew his secrets.
And now, according to a four-year-old child hiding in a dusty corner, she was the one who had slipped a wire into his most private sanctuary.
"Emma," Aleandro said, his voice dropping into that low, level register that made seasoned capos lower their eyes. "Did anyone else come into the study? Did you tell your mother?"
"No," Emma whispered, clutching her stuffed rabbit tighter against her chest. "Mama was busy with the bleach buckets upstairs. I didn't want to get in trouble for being out of bed. But Miss Isabella looked... she looked angry. Not like she usually looks when she smiles at you. Her jaw was tight, and her hands were shaking."
Aleandro stood up. The silence in the office was deafening, broken only by the steady, heavy tick-tock of the antique clock resting on the sideboard.
He didn't call for his head of security, Mateo. He didn't sound the estate alarm. In the mafia underworld, panic was a luxury reserved for the dead. If Isabella was a rat—or worse, a deep-cover operative for the rival Moretti-Sokolov syndicate—reacting with open fury would only tip his hand. He needed to play the fool while he sharpened the blade.
"Emma," Aleandro said, his expression softening just enough to soothe the child. "You are a very smart girl. But this is our secret. If anyone asks, you were in the kitchen coloring your bluebird. Can you do that for me?"
Emma nodded solemnly. "A secret between us?"
"Between us," Aleandro confirmed.
He pocketed the bug, walked Emma back to the corridor where her mother was finishing up, and then retreated into the dark cavern of his private study. He locked the heavy door, walked over to his mahogany desk, and pulled up the private security feed from Tuesday and Wednesday.
He fast-forwarded through the empty hours of the night until the timestamp hit 2:14 PM on Wednesday afternoon.
The screen flickered. The door to the study opened silently. Isabella stepped into frame. She was wearing a cream silk blouse and tailored trousers, her dark hair pulled back into an elegant chignon. She didn't look like a spy. She looked like a queen surveying her domain.
She walked straight to the red velvet chair. She stepped up, lifted the carved walnut face of the clock, and slid her slim fingers inside. Her face wasn't shaking, as Emma had thought—it was completely, chillingly expressionless.
Then, she pulled out a smartphone and typed a quick message.
Aleandro zoomed in on the reflection in the dark glass of the window behind her. He couldn't see the screen, but he could read the first three letters of the recipient's contact name reflected in her pupils:
V-A-L.
Valentin Sokolov. The heir to the blood-soaked empire that had tried to assassinate Aleandro three times in the last five years.
Aleandro’s phone buzzed on the desk. It was an incoming call from Isabella herself.

He stared at the screen, watching his own face illuminated by her name flashing in bright, innocent white letters: Isabella ❤️.
The trap was set. The only question left was who was going to spring it first.
