Chapter 9 - THE WHISPER IN THE WAREHOUSE

Six months had passed since the night the antique clock blew apart, taking the remnants of the Sokolov syndicate with it. The Brooklyn waterfront hummed with a quiet, efficient rhythm under Moretti Holdings. No blood spilled on the docks; no unauthorized ships docked without a full audit by Mateo’s men.

Yet, peace in the mafia underworld was never permanent—it was merely a compressed spring waiting for a heavier boot.

It was a frigid Tuesday night at Pier 44. The rain beat down against the corrugated tin roof of the massive shipping warehouse, creating a rhythmic, hollow roar. Inside, lit only by overhead sodium-vapor lamps that cast long, jaundiced shadows, Aleandro Moretti walked between towering stacks of shipping containers filled with electronics and imported steel.

His wounded shoulder had long since healed, leaving only a faint white line beneath his tailored shirt. He walked alone, his hands buried in the pockets of his dark wool coat, until his boots crunched to a halt in front of Container 804.

The heavy steel doors were unlatched.

Aleandro reached out, grabbed the rusted iron handle, and swung the door open with a single, practiced pull.

Inside sat a solitary metal chair beneath a flickering fluorescent bulb. Tied securely to the chair with heavy industrial zip-ties was a man who looked nothing like the fierce capos of the past. Viktor Sokolov—Valentin’s younger, reckless cousin—was shivering, his face bruised, his clothes caked in dried mud and salt.

For six months, Viktor had been hiding in the underground tunnels of Montreal, believing he was safe. It had taken Mateo’s intelligence network exactly 180 days to track his digital footprint down to a burner phone pinging off a diner in Queens.

Viktor raised his head, his eyes bloodshot and wide with sheer terror as he saw the towering silhouette of Don Moretti standing in the doorway.

"Aleandro..." Viktor choked out, his voice hoarse and cracked. "Please... I didn't have anything to do with Isabella’s setup. That was Valentin and her! I swear on my mother’s grave!"

Aleandro stepped slowly into the container. The air smelled of ozone, damp cardboard, and fear. He didn't pull a gun. He didn't raise his voice. He simply stopped two feet away from the trembling man, his dark eyes as cold and bottomless as the Atlantic trench.

"Your cousin Valentin is currently breaking rocks in a federal penitentiary upstate, Viktor," Aleandro said softly, his voice cutting through the hum of the warehouse. "And Isabella is locked away in a private psychiatric facility in the Swiss Alps, staring at white walls for the rest of her natural life."

Viktor swallowed hard, his Adam’s apple bobbing up and down. "Then why am I here? What do you want from me?"

Aleandro leaned forward, resting one hand on the back of the metal chair.

"When Isabella planted that bug in my father's clock," Aleandro said, his tone dangerously low, "she didn't just steal information. She used an encryption protocol that hadn't been used since the old Syndicate war of 2012. A protocol exclusive to the Bratva's high council."

Viktor’s eyes widened further. "I... I don't know what you're talking about!"

"Lying to me is a very expensive hobby, Viktor," Aleandro replied, his voice chillingly calm. "Who inside my own corporate structure helped her pass that encryption key? Because a woman whose brother I executed for dealing smack doesn't magically know how to hack a Moretti-grade military frequency without an inside architect."

Viktor opened his mouth to speak, but before a single word could escape, a sharp, metallic ping echoed from the roof beams above.

Sniper.
