Chapter 10 - The Gala at the Harbor House

One year later, the annual Boston Maritime Charity Gala transformed the grand ballroom of the Harbor House into a glittering sea of crystal chandeliers, classical string quartets, and the most powerful political and business leaders on the East Coast.

At the center of the grand staircase stood Bella.

She wore an exquisite, custom-tailored midnight-blue velvet gown that swept gracefully across the marble floor. Around her neck rested a delicate platinum pendant set with a single, flawless diamond—the signature heirloom of the Romano maritime dynasty.

As she descended the steps, every conversation in the vast ballroom hushed. Heads turned in unanimous, reverent silence. Men and women who once whispered behind her back now bowed their heads respectfully as she passed.

Waiting at the bottom of the staircase was Don Matteo, leaning slightly on his cane, alongside Alina Mercer and a small, secure entourage of corporate executives.

“You look every bit the queen of this harbor, Isabella,” Matteo noted with a faint, approving smile as she reached the floor.

“A queen doesn't rule by sitting on a throne, Don Matteo,” Bella replied smoothly, accepting a glass of sparkling mineral water from a passing waiter. “She rules by ensuring no one ever dares to challenge the borders.”

Across the crowded room, local politicians, international shipping magnates, and federal regulators lined up patiently just to exchange a brief word with her. The vulnerability of the pregnant woman standing in a penthouse kitchen two years ago had completely vanished, replaced by an ironclad sovereign who commanded the respect of two worlds.
