Chapter 10 - The First Steps

Late that night, after the gala concluded and the glittering ballroom emptied into silence, Bella returned to the penthouse suite overlooking the twinkling lights of Boston Harbor.
She kicked off her designer heels, letting out a soft sigh of relief as her feet touched the cool hardwood floor. The heavy executive responsibilities melted away the moment she heard a soft, joyful giggle coming down the hallway.
She walked quickly into the nursery.
There, holding onto the edge of a custom wooden toy chest, stood one-year-old Marco. His dark curls bounced as he wobbled on chubby little legs, clutching a small stuffed ship in his left hand.
Standing behind him, steadying him with gentle, protective hands, was Don Matteo.
The aging mafia patriarch—a man who had ordered executions, broken syndicates, and terrified enemies with a single look—was smiling down at his grandson with a warmth and tenderness he had never once shown his own children.
“Look at him, Isabella,” Matteo whispered softly as Bella stepped into the room. “He has your father’s stubborn determination. He’s going to walk before he’s even finished learning how to run.”
Bella knelt down on the carpet, opening her arms wide. “Come here, my love.”
Marco let out an excited squeal, releasing his grip on the toy chest and taking two wobbly, courageous steps forward straight into his mother’s embrace.

Bella pulled him tightly against her chest, burying her face in his soft curls as a profound wave of peace washed over her soul. She had survived the lies, the betrayal, the corporate warfare, and the ruins of a broken marriage.
She hadn't just survived. She had conquered.
