Chapter 4 - The Fall of an Empire

The arrest of Adriano Moretti hit the financial news networks like a tidal wave by noon. Within hours, the stock price of Moretti Atlantic Holdings dipped briefly before surging upward as institutional investors realized the cancer within the board had been cleanly and ruthlessly excised. Victor Reeve’s hostile takeover bid collapsed overnight as federal investigators seized Apex Ventures and launched a sweeping probe into his illicit financing networks.
In the penthouse overlooking Boston Harbor, the evening sky bled deep shades of orange and violet. Bella stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, her hands resting gently over her swollen stomach. The heavy lower-back ache was still there, but the crushing weight that had suffocated her for months was completely gone.
Behind her, the private elevator chimed softly. Don Matteo stepped into the penthouse, walking slowly across the hardwood floor. He carried a small, velvet-lined mahogany box, placing it quietly on the kitchen island before taking a seat.
“The federal prosecutor’s office just updated Alina,” Matteo said, his voice softer than usual. “Adriano’s legal team tried to file an emergency injunction to block the disownment clause. It was thrown out in under ten minutes. He’ll be spending the next ten to fifteen years reflecting on his ambition in a federal penitentiary in Vermont.”
Bella turned around, looking at her former father-in-law with steady, neutral eyes. “And Bianca?”
“Fled to New York this afternoon,” Matteo replied with a faint, cynical smirk. “Only to discover her accounts were entirely empty. She’s currently trying to book a bus ticket back home. Her expensive tastes won’t survive very long without a Moretti credit card.”
Matteo paused, looking up at Bella with a profound depth of respect that few living souls had ever earned from the aging mafia patriarch. “When my son brought you into this family twelve years ago, I thought you were just another society girl looking for a secure name,” Matteo admitted, his voice carrying a rare vulnerability. “I was a fool. You have the mind of a founder, Isabella. You saved this family from total destruction.”
“I didn't save the family for you, Don Matteo,” Bella corrected gently, her hand sliding over her belly as her son gave a reassuring kick. “I saved it for my son. He will inherit an empire built on truth and strength, not on lies and betrayal.”

Matteo nodded slowly, standing up from his chair. He walked over to the mahogany box on the island, opened the lid, and slid a heavy, cold-rolled platinum key across the marble counter toward her. “The primary voting shares of Moretti Atlantic Holdings have officially been transferred into a newly established trust,” Matteo said quietly. “Managed exclusively by Isabella Romano Moretti. Effective immediately, you are the chairman of the board.”
Bella looked at the platinum key—the ultimate symbol of power in the Boston underworld and corporate elite alike. She didn't hesitate. She picked it up, her fingers closing firmly around the metal.
