Chapter 6 - The Sovereign’s Shadow

Six months after Marco’s birth, the executive boardroom of Moretti Atlantic Holdings radiated an aura of absolute, unyielding dominion.

Bella sat at the head of the massive mahogany table, wearing a structured charcoal blazer, her dark hair pinned back with severe precision. In the corner of the room, cradled in a discreet bassinet lined with soft cashmere, six-month-old Marco slept peacefully, guarded by two trusted security operatives stationed outside the door.

Alina Mercer slid a dossier across the center of the table.

“The European shipping consortium has formally ratified our acquisition of the Rotterdam terminal,” Alina reported, her voice clipped and professional. “However, there is an anomaly in the secondary maritime registries. A newly formed entity out of Zurich, known as Vanguard Holdings, has been quietly buying up delinquent debt on our eastern seaboard freight lines.”

Bella didn't blink. She opened the folder, her eyes scanning the financial tracking numbers with the ruthless efficiency her father had taught her decades ago.

“Vanguard Holdings isn't an independent firm,” Bella said, her voice cutting through the quiet room like a razor. “Check the primary registry routing numbers. Look at the tax ID pattern.”

Alina tapped her tablet, cross-referencing the data. Her breath hitched. “The routing structure... it matches Victor Reeve’s former offshore conduits. But Reeve’s assets were seized during the federal sweep last winter. Who’s backing them?”

“Someone who thinks my husband’s imprisonment and my father-in-law’s aging hands left the throne empty,” Bella replied calmly, closing the folder. “Bring me the comprehensive asset trace on every board member associated with Vanguard by tomorrow morning. If someone wants a war, we will meet them at the port.”
