Chapter 2 - The 8:45 AM Execution

By 8:45 AM on Monday, Adriano Moretti sat behind his massive mahogany desk on the forty-second floor of Moretti Atlantic Holdings. Sunlight poured through the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, illuminating the sprawling panorama of the Boston harbor below—ports, cranes, and container ships that his great-grandfather had fought and bled to control.

His custom Swiss watch ticked softly against his wrist. Fifteen minutes until the automated wire transfer cleared. Eight million dollars moving from the Moretti Legacy Trust into Apex Ventures, the shell company controlled by Victor Reeve.

Adriano leaned back in his leather executive chair, a triumphant smirk curving his lips. For twelve years, he had lived under the suffocating shadow of his father’s authority. Every move he made had been scrutinized, every executive decision second-guessed. But by noon today, he would be financially independent. He had already booked a private jet for New York, where Bianca was waiting in a luxury penthouse overlooking Central Park.

As for Bella—he felt a fleeting pang of guilt, but quickly brushed it aside. She was quiet, predictable, and had signed the divorce agreement without dropping a single tear. She would receive a comfortable alimony settlement, raise the child in a suburban house far away from the corporate theater, and never trouble him again.

He reached for his desk phone to signal his private banker for the pre-transfer confirmation. Before his finger could press the intercom button, the heavy oak doors of his office swung wide open.

Adriano frowned, annoyance flashing across his features. “I left strict instructions that I was not to be disturbed until—”

He stopped dead. It wasn't his secretary. It was Don Matteo Moretti. Flanking the patriarch were four heavy-set security enforcers from the private detail downstairs, followed closely by Alina Mercer carrying a thick leather briefcase.

Adriano slowly stood up, his heart skipping a beat as he looked into his father’s glacial, unblinking eyes. “Father... what is the meaning of this? You haven’t stepped foot on the executive floor in four years.”

Matteo walked slowly into the center of the office, his cane tapping rhythmically against the Italian marble floor. He stopped ten feet from the desk, his expression entirely devoid of paternal warmth. “You always were impatient, Adriano,” Matteo said, his voice terrifyingly quiet. “You wanted the crown, but you never learned how to carry the weight of the throne.”

Adriano swallowed hard, forcing a tight, confident smile. “I don’t know what you’re talking about. I’m executing a strategic portfolio realignment—”

“You’re liquidating our generational assets to fund a backroom deal with Victor Reeve,” Matteo interrupted sharply, slamming the rubber tip of his cane onto the floor with a crack that echoed like a gunshot.

The color drained instantly from Adriano’s face. He stumbled backward against the edge of his desk. “Reeve? That’s... that’s absurd. Someone has been feeding you false reports—”

“The reports didn't come from a spy, son,” a calm, melodic voice drifted from the hallway.

The security guards parted. Bella stepped into the office. She wore a sharp emerald-green maternity dress, her posture upright, her gaze absolute ice. She carried no files, no briefcase, only the quiet, crushing aura of total control.

Adriano stared at her in sheer disbelief. “Bella? What are you doing here? You should be at home—”

“I was at home, Adriano,” Bella said, stepping up beside Don Matteo. “Watching you pack your bags for a life you thought you stole from a woman you underestimated.”
