Chapter 11 - Shadows of the Past

While the penthouse enjoyed an atmosphere of absolute warmth and security, three hundred miles away in a desolate industrial district of northern New York, a solitary figure stepped out of a Greyhound bus into the freezing autumn rain.

Bianca Ricci pulled her worn designer trench coat tightly around her shoulders, shivering violently against the damp chill.

Gone were the luxury apartments overlooking Central Park, the chauffeured black sedans, the unlimited expense accounts, and the glittering galas of Boston’s elite. Without a Moretti credit card or a corporate sponsor, her expensive tastes had bled her dry within months. Her former friends had blocked her numbers; her high-society contacts acted as though she had never existed.

She stood on the sidewalk outside a dingy, flickering diner, staring at her reflection in the greasy window. Her makeup was smudged, her hair limp from the rain.

She had thought Adriano Moretti was a golden ticket to a life of limitless luxury. Instead, she had hitched her wagon to a falling star that had crashed straight into a federal penitentiary, leaving her stranded in the wreckage of a life built entirely on sand.

As she pushed open the heavy diner door to seek shelter from the storm, she realized the ultimate truth of the world she had tried to infiltrate: power belonged to those who built empires with their own hands, not to those who tried to steal them through a back door.
