Chapter 3 - The Trap Closes

Panic flared violently in Adriano’s chest. He grabbed his desk phone, frantically punching the extension for the financial clearinghouse. “Security! Get security in this office immediately—!”

“Your internal extensions have been disconnected, Mr. Moretti,” Alina Mercer stated coldly, stepping forward and placing a certified legal document directly over his phone.

Adriano stared down at the paper. His eyes scanned the header. Emergency Board Resolution: Revocation of Executive Authority and Asset Freeze.

“You can’t do this!” Adriano shouted, his voice cracking as desperation took over. “I am the managing director of asset allocation! The board requires a forty-eight-hour notice for emergency votes—”

“The board was convened at 8:00 AM this morning under Article Nine of the Moretti Charter,” Matteo interrupted, his voice dropping an octave with absolute menace. “An emergency quorum voted unanimously to strip you of every executive title, every voting share, and every corporate privilege associated with the Moretti name.”

The office door pushed open once more. Bianca Ricci walked in, looking frantic and breathless, wearing a designer trench coat and dragging a rolling suitcase behind her. “Adriano, what is going on? My apartment lease at Harbor House was just terminated by the building management! When I tried to access my consulting account, the bank said it was flagged for federal money laundering audit! And my car—they just repossessed my car from the valet downstairs!”

Adriano stared at her in horror, then looked back at his father and wife. The puzzle pieces violently slammed together in his mind. The wire transfers, the sudden bank freezes, the emergency board meeting—it hadn't been a lucky guess. It was an ambush executed with military precision.

“You... you framed me,” Adriano whispered, his voice trembling as he looked at Bella. “You let me think I was fooling you. You watched me plan everything while you sat there playing the helpless pregnant wife!”

Bella walked slowly toward him, stopping just inches away. She looked up at him—at the man who had held her on a bathroom floor after a miscarriage, the man who had promised forever before trading her for a luxury apartment and a corporate backstabber.

“I didn't frame you, Adriano,” Bella said softly, her voice steady and lethal. “I simply gave you enough rope to hang yourself. You thought my silence was weakness. You thought my pregnancy made me a burden. But you forgot the first lesson my father taught me over his balance sheets: people lie, numbers lie, but a trapped man always exposes his hand.”

Alina opened her briefcase and pulled out a second, final document—the one Adriano had signed the previous evening on their kitchen island. “You believe the divorce papers you signed were a simple dissolution of marriage,” Alina said, sliding the parchment across the mahogany wood. “Take a close look at Section Four, Mr. Moretti.”

Adriano’s hands shook violently as he picked up the paper. His eyes raced across the legal text, stopping at a bolded clause near the bottom: In consideration of mutual release from marital obligations and absolute financial absolution, the departing party hereby surrenders all present and future claims to the Moretti Legacy Trust, corporate shares, maritime assets, and familial inheritance, effective immediately upon execution.

It wasn't a divorce agreement. It was a total, irrevocable act of disownment. By signing it to expedite his freedom and secure his escape with Bianca, Adriano had legally signed away every cent of his family fortune, leaving himself naked, bankrupt, and legally vulnerable to federal prosecution.

“No,” Adriano breathed, the paper slipping from his limp fingers to flutter onto the floor. “No, this is invalid—I signed under false pretenses—I’ll fight this in court—!”

“With what money?” Matteo asked coldly, turning his back on his son. “Your personal accounts are frozen. Your offshore conduits are locked under federal investigation. You are a civilian with no name, no company, and no allies.”

Two federal marshals, accompanied by local law enforcement, stepped out from the private elevator alcove, their badges flashing sharply under the fluorescent lights.

“Adriano Moretti,” the lead agent said, stepping forward with steel cuffs in hand. “You are under arrest for wire fraud, corporate embezzlement, and conspiracy against interstate commerce.”
