Chapter 12 - Shadows on the Perimeter

The following morning brought a brilliant, crisp autumn sun that washed the limestone facades of the North Avenue estate in amber light. Inside the massive professional kitchen, Mrs. Gable was organizing a breakfast spread of fresh pastries, artisan cheese, and sliced fruit, while Lily sat at the marble island with a sketchbook, enthusiastically coloring a purple dinosaur with neon green spots.

I was pouring a cup of coffee when my phone buzzed on the counter.

An unknown number flashed across the screen. I ignored it, sliding the phone aside. But a second later, it buzzed again—followed by a text message.

If you think Giovanni Fierro can protect you forever, you’re more naive than I thought. Look out your front gates, Jessica.

My blood ran cold.

I dropped the coffee pot back onto its saucer with a sharp clatter that made Mrs. Gable jump. Without a word, I hurried out of the kitchen, crossing the vast marble foyer and pushing open the heavy glass front doors to step out onto the expansive stone veranda.

The private drive stretched out for nearly a quarter of a mile, flanked by towering wrought-iron gates and ancient oak trees.

Parked just outside the security perimeter, idling by the curb of the public road, was a nondescript black sedan. Standing beside the driver’s door, leaning casually against the metal frame with a cigarette burning between his fingers, was Tyler Brooks.

He looked terrible. His expensive suit was rumpled and stained, his hair unwashed, his face unshaven. But as he saw me step out onto the veranda, a twisted, desperate grin spread across his face. He pulled a cheap burner phone from his pocket, waved it mockingly in the air, and mouthed a single word: Open.

Before panic could take root, heavy footsteps sounded behind me.

Giovanni stepped out onto the veranda, wearing a dark wool overcoat, his jaw set in a hard, dangerous line. He didn't need to ask who was out there; Marko had already radioed the estate security detail the moment the sedan stopped near the property line.

"Stay inside, Jessica," Giovanni commanded quietly, his voice carrying the absolute authority of an army general.

"Giovanni, he’s desperate," I said, stepping forward to catch his arm. "If he’s at the gates, he has nothing left to lose. He could do something stupid."

"Let him try," Giovanni replied, his amber eyes flashing with cold steel. He raised his wrist, tapping the encrypted communicator strapped beneath his cuff. "Marko, clear the perimeter. Bring him to the courtyard. Let's see how brave Mr. Brooks is when he isn't hiding behind a text message."

Within two minutes, three tactical security vehicles swept out from the underground garage, surrounding the black sedan with military precision. Before Tyler could even drop his cigarette, four armed guards had him pinned against the hood of his car, disarming him of whatever pathetic leverage he thought he carried.

They dragged him past the iron gates, up the long private drive, and threw him unceremoniously onto the pristine cobblestone courtyard right in front of the mansion’s grand entrance.

Giovanni walked down the stone steps slowly, his heavy leather shoes clicking rhythmically against the stone. I followed closely behind, standing near the top of the steps where Lily couldn't see from the kitchen window.

Tyler scrambled to his hands and knees, spitting blood and dirt, looking up at Giovanni with wild, bloodshot eyes.

"You ruined me!" Tyler shrieked, his voice cracking hysterically as he pointed a trembling finger at me. "She ruined me! You stole my company, you froze my accounts, you treated me like trash!"

Giovanni stopped a few feet away, looking down at him as if he were an insect crawling in the dirt.

"You built your company on stolen capital and corporate espionage financed by a bitter old woman," Giovanni said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "You tried to destroy my wife’s life before she ever set foot in this house. And you thought you could walk up to my gates and threaten her?"

"She was my wife first!" Tyler screamed, lunging forward, only to have Marko’s heavy boot press firmly into the small of his back, driving him back into the dirt.

"She was a human being you abandoned when she needed you most," Giovanni corrected, his voice dropping into a register that made the air feel heavy. "And now, you are nothing. You are a trespasser on property you have no right to look at, let alone approach."

Giovanni turned his head slightly, signaling Marko.

"Put him in the back of an unmarked transport," Giovanni ordered coldly. "Drive him to the state line, strip him of his phone, his wallet, and his clothes, and drop him in the middle of rural Indiana with a bus ticket and twenty dollars. If he ever crosses back into Illinois, feed him to the river."

"No! Please!" Tyler wailed, thrashing against the guards as they hauled him up by his arms. "Jessica! Tell him to stop! Please!"

I didn't say a word. I didn't feel anger, or pity, or fear. I just watched as the man who had defined my deepest insecurities was packed into the back of a black van and driven away into the gray Chicago fog, vanishing from our lives forever.
