Chapter 20 - The Horizon

Three months after the wedding, the Chicago winter settled in with a blanket of pristine white snow that covered the sprawling gardens of the North Avenue estate.
Inside the grand study, the fireplace crackled with a warm, roaring fire, casting dancing shadows across the mahogany shelves and the heavy leather furniture.
I sat curled up in the oversized armchair, reading a book, while Giovanni worked quietly at his desk, occasionally looking up just to make sure I was still there—a habit he had developed and refused to break.
The heavy oak door swung open without a knock.
Lily marched into the room, wearing her yellow pajamas covered in tiny pandas, dragging a massive coloring book and a box of crayons behind her. She walked straight past Giovanni’s desk, ignored the corporate financial reports, and climbed directly into my lap, settling comfortably against my chest.
"Mommy, can you draw a dragon fighting a spaceship?" she asked, handing me a blue crayon.
I smiled, opening her book to a blank page. "Only if Mr. Hops helps direct the battle."
Lily giggled, propping her stuffed rabbit up on the arm of the chair to watch.
Giovanni pushed back his leather chair, walked over, and knelt down beside my chair, resting his hands on the armrests, enclosing both Lily and me in a warm, unbreakable circle of absolute security.
He looked at the blank page, then up at me, his amber eyes shining with a quiet, profound peace.

"That sounds like an exceptionally difficult tactical maneuver," Giovanni noted solemnly. "Do we need to call an emergency board meeting to approve the spaceship?"
"No board meeting required," I laughed, wrapping my free arm around his neck and pulling him down for a kiss as the snow fell softly outside the frosted glass windows of our home. "The executive trust has unanimously approved it."
