Chapter 15 - The Warehouse Raid

The industrial docklands at 2:00 a.m. were shrouded in a thick, choking fog rolling in off Lake Michigan. The old logistics warehouse stood like a decaying monolith against the dark skyline, its windows dark except for a faint, flickering blue glow pulsing from the second-floor office windows.

Three unmarked tactical vans rolled silently to a stop behind a row of rusted shipping containers.

Marko and four armed operatives disembarked first, moving like ghosts through the shadows toward the side entrance. Giovanni and I stepped out behind them, the cool lake breeze biting at our skin. I wore a matte-black tactical vest over my sweater, my hair secured in a tight military bun, feeling a strange, electric rush of adrenaline that had nothing to do with fear and everything to do with taking back control of my own destiny.

"Stay behind Marko’s lead unit," Giovanni whispered, his hand resting briefly on my shoulder. "If shit hits the fan, you drop flat behind the concrete pillar. Understood?"

"Understood," I nodded, chambering a round in the compact sidearm Marko had handed me during the drive.

Click.

The side door gave way with a muffled thud as Marko’s team breached the lock.

We moved inside in a tight, disciplined wedge. The interior smelled of damp concrete, rust, and overheated computer servers. The main floor was piled high with empty wooden crates and discarded shipping pallets, but the real action was upstairs in the administrative offices.

Footsteps echoed above us—frantic, rushed whispering.

"...the firewall is holding, but if their encryption sweeps hit our secondary server—"

Cynthia’s voice drifted down the stairwell.

Marko signaled two operatives to flank the stairs, while Giovanni took the lead, stepping onto the metal grating with silent, terrifying grace.

We burst through the double doors of the second-floor office.

Cynthia was standing in front of a bank of glowing computer monitors, her hair disheveled, her designer blouse wrinkled, typing frantically onto a mechanical keyboard. Two hired IT technicians scrambled backward, throwing their hands up as Marko’s assault rifles leveled directly at their chests.

Cynthia spun around, her eyes widening in sheer, unadulterated terror as she saw Giovanni step into the room. Behind him, she spotted me standing in a tactical vest with a sidearm resting securely in my grip.

"G-Giovanni!" Cynthia stammered, backing up against the main console until her hips hit the edge of the desk. "You... you can't be here. This is private... this is corporate research!"

"This is industrial espionage and attempted sabotage," Giovanni corrected coldly, walking forward until he stood right in front of her. He reached out, grabbed the primary hard drive housing the stolen data, and ripped the cables straight out of the back with a single brutal yank. He tossed the heavy drive onto the floor beneath his shoe, crushing it under his heel with a sickening crunch of plastic and silicon.

"No!" Cynthia screamed, lunging forward, but Marko caught her by the arm, forcing her back into her chair.

"You lost, Cynthia," I said, stepping into the center of the office, my voice steady and cold. "Your aunt is exiled in Italy, your father’s shipping contracts are voided, and whatever pathetic little revenge scheme you cooked up in this damp warehouse just ended."

Cynthia glared up at me, her face twisting with venomous hatred. "You think you won, you little nobody? You’re just a nurse playing dress-up in a billionaire’s world! The board will never accept you! The family will never accept you!"

Giovanni stepped closer, his shadow completely swallowing Cynthia’s trembling frame.

"She doesn't need their acceptance," Giovanni said softly, his voice dropping into a register so chilling that even the hired hackers stopped breathing. "She owns twenty percent of this company. And I own the rest. As for the family... you’re looking at the only people who matter."

He turned to Marko. "Pack up the servers. Hand the hard drives over to federal cyber-crime investigators. And make sure Cynthia receives a formal trespass notice banning her from every commercial zone in the state of Illinois."

"Gladly, Boss," Marko grinned.

As we walked out of the warehouse into the cold Chicago dawn, the sun was just beginning to break over the horizon, painting the lake in brilliant streaks of gold and crimson.

I took a deep breath of the crisp morning air, feeling a profound, unshakeable peace settle deep into my bones.
