Chapter 4 - The Lobby Confrontation

The grand lobby of the Bellmont Grand was typically a sanctuary of hushed whispers, marble pillars, and towering floral arrangements. Tonight, it felt like a war zone.
When Giovanni, Sophia, and I stepped out of the private elevator, all conversation among the remaining late-night guests ground to a halt. My mother was sitting rigidly on a velvet settee, fanning herself with a cocktail napkin while my new brother-in-law awkwardly offered her a glass of ice water.
And standing near the revolving glass doors was Tyler Brooks.
He had shed his suit jacket, his tie loosened around his collar, looking flushed and agitated as he argued with two towering security guards in black suits who were blocking his path.
“I’m her ex-husband!” Tyler was shouting, his voice echoing off the marble ceiling. “She doesn't even know this guy! He’s some billionaire lunatic playing games! Let me through!”
“Mr. Brooks,” a calm, icy voice cut across the lobby.
Tyler spun around.
Giovanni walked forward, his stride unhurried, radiating an aura of dangerous, effortless authority. I walked beside him, my head held high, my hand resting lightly within the crook of his elbow—not because I needed support, but because the look on Tyler’s face when he realized we were a united front was worth every bit of the madness.
“You,” Tyler spat, pointing an accusing finger at Giovanni. “You’re making a massive mistake. You don't know what kind of woman she is. She’s a baggage-carrying, single mother who—”
Smack.
The sharp, echoing crack of a hand striking a face silenced the entire lobby.
It wasn't me. It was Sophia.
My gentle, violin-playing younger sister stood there with her hand stinging, glaring at Tyler with an intensity I had never seen in her before.
“Don't you ever talk about my sister like that again,” Sophia hissed, her voice trembling with fury. “You abandoned her when she was pregnant. You crawled back into our family by marrying our cousin like a coward. And now you’re standing in a hotel lobby throwing tantrums because she had the good sense to upgrade.”
Tyler clutched his stinging cheek, his face turning an ugly shade of crimson. He looked at Sophia, then at my mother—who was still fanning herself in stunned silence—and finally at me.
“You’re going to regret this, Jessica,” Tyler snarled, his voice dropping to a venomous whisper as he glared at Giovanni and me. “That man doesn't care about you. You’re just a project to him. A charity case in a cheap dress.”
Giovanni didn't raise his voice. He didn't even blink. He simply stepped slightly in front of me, looking down at Tyler with the cold, detached pity one might reserve for an ant crawling across a sidewalk.
“Marko,” Giovanni said softly.
From the shadows near the entrance, a massive man with a broken nose and a dark suit stepped forward.
“Boss?”
“Escort Mr. Brooks out of the hotel,” Giovanni instructed calmly. “And make sure he understands that if he ever approaches my wife—or attempts to contact her or her daughter again—his shipping contracts with Fierro Logistics will be terminated before the sun rises tomorrow.”
Tyler’s face drained of color. “You can’t do that! My logistics firm relies on—”
“I am Fierro Logistics,” Giovanni interrupted, his voice dropping into a register so chilling that even the security guards stepped back. “Get him out of my sight.”
Before Tyler could protest another word, Marko grabbed him by the collar of his shirt and hoisted him off his feet, dragging him toward the revolving doors as easily as if he were carrying a sack of laundry.
Vanessa, who had waddled out of the ballroom just in time to witness her husband being bodily ejected from a five-star hotel by a mafia-adjacent security detail, let out a choked shriek and hurried after them.
Silence descended upon the lobby once more.
My mother slowly lowered her napkin, staring at me with a look of terrifying, unreadable awe.
“Jessica,” my mother whispered, her voice cracking slightly. “Who... exactly... did you marry?”
May you like
I looked sideways at Giovanni. He glanced down at me, the ghost of a smile touching his lips.
“Mother,” I said clearly, tasting the incredible power of those words for the very first time. “Meet my husband, Giovanni.”
