Chapter 18 - Vows in the Conservatory

The string quartet positioned near the back of the conservatory struck up a soft, elegant melody as the glass doors swung open.

Sophia walked down the aisle first, scattering delicate rose petals, followed by Lily, who solemnly dropped a few extra petals and gave her gray rabbit a reassuring pat.

And then, I walked out.

Standing at the altar beneath a canopy of white roses and green ivy was Giovanni. He wore a classic, impeccably tailored black tuxedo, his white shirt crisp, his amber eyes fixed entirely on me with a look of such raw, unadulterated adoration that my knees felt weak.

As I reached the altar, he took my hands in his. His palms were warm, steady, and grounding.

The officiant—a retired federal judge who was a trusted friend of the Fierro family—began the ceremony, but the words drifted past me like a gentle breeze. I heard only the steady rhythm of Giovanni’s heartbeat and the quiet, absolute truth in his eyes.

"Jessica," Giovanni recited, sliding a new platinum band over my knuckle, his voice steady and clear for all to hear. "When you walked into my life, you didn't ask for my name, my money, or my protection. You offered me your hand when I was drowning in my own isolation. I promise to stand by you, to protect you and our daughter with every breath I draw, and to love you unconditionally for the rest of my days."

"Giovanni," I whispered, my voice trembling slightly as I slid his ring into place. "You pulled me out of the shadows and gave me a world I never knew I was allowed to dream of. I promise to be your equal, your partner, and your sanctuary, through every storm we ever face."

"By the power vested in me," the judge smiled, "I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride."
