Chapter 8 - The Shadow of the Past

The underground study in the North Avenue estate looked less like a home office and more like a high-security intelligence command center. Monitors lined the walls displaying financial charts, corporate audits, and security feeds, while Marko stood by a massive mahogany desk holding a thick manila folder.

When Giovanni and I entered, Marko nodded respectfully.

“Boss. Mrs. Fierro.”

“Tell her what you found, Marko,” Giovanni instructed, pulling out a chair for me before taking a seat opposite the desk.

Marko flipped open the folder and slid a series of printed financial statements across the polished wood.

“For the past six months, Tyler Brooks’s real estate firm has been bleeding money,” Marko explained, pointing to a series of sharp downward red lines on the graphs. “He overextended himself on a commercial development downtown, and his investors are pulling out. He’s facing imminent bankruptcy.”

I stared at the papers, a cold knot forming in my stomach. “Okay... but what does that have to do with us?”

“Look at page four,” Giovanni murmured.

I turned the page. My eyes scanned the corporate registry documents until a familiar name jumped out at me.

Primary Financial Backer / Silent Partner: Fierro Logistics (Subsidiary Account).

My head snapped up. I stared at Giovanni, then back at Marko.

“Fierro Logistics?” I whispered. “One of your subsidiary accounts is backing Tyler’s failing real estate firm?”

“It gets worse,” Marko continued grimly. “That subsidiary account was authorized under a legacy executive clause. An executive who had secondary signing privileges until three months ago.”

“Aunt Elena,” Giovanni said, his voice dropping into a lethal whisper.

“Bingo,” Marko nodded. “Aunt Elena has been quietly funneling capital into Tyler’s firm for the past year. Not because she likes him, but because she found out he was your ex-husband, Jessica. She was positioning him as a corporate proxy—buying up distressed properties around the city and preparing a hostile legal challenge against our real estate holdings, using Tyler as the front man.”

The pieces clicked together in my mind with terrifying clarity.

Tyler didn't just happen to marry my cousin Sandra and show up at Sophia’s wedding. He didn't just happen to mock my poverty and my job as a pediatric nurse.

He was being funded. He was being weaponized against me—and against Giovanni.

“They were using me to get to you,” I whispered, the realization hitting me like a physical blow. “Tyler came to that wedding on purpose. He knew I’d be there in the overflow section. He wanted to break me down so I wouldn't have the strength to fight back, all to weaken your domestic standing before the board vote.”

Giovanni stood up so fast his chair scraped loudly against the floor. His face was a mask of cold, absolute fury.

“Marko,” Giovanni commanded, his voice trembling with suppressed rage.

“Boss?”

“Shut down every single account tied to Tyler Brooks’s firm within the hour. Call in every commercial loan, freeze all liquid assets, and initiate immediate foreclosure proceedings on his primary development.”

“Done,” Marko said, a grim smile touching his lips. “And Brooks himself?”

“Leave him to me,” Giovanni said softly.
