Chapter 4 - The Midnight Visitor

The fluorescent lights of the county jail hummed a maddening, high-pitched tune. Juliette sat on the edge of the bolted steel cot, her designer silk dress stained and torn, her hair tangled around her face. Gone was the pristine, untouchable socialite; in her place sat a cornered, shivering animal realizing the full magnitude of her catastrophe.
She had spent the last three hours screaming for her defense attorney, pounding her fists against the reinforced glass of her holding cell, only to be told by a bored guard that her legal counsel had abruptly terminated her representation citing "unforeseen ethical conflicts of interest."
How? she thought frantically, pacing the narrow concrete floor. My offshore accounts are secure. My alias is ironclad. Christopher couldn't possibly know about Zurich. He’s just a software engineer wrapped up in tech stocks and corporate mergers!
A sharp metallic clatter echoed down the damp hallway. Heavy, synchronized boot steps approached cell block 4B. Juliette spun around, pressing her back against the cold concrete wall as a tall, imposing figure emerged from the shadows of the corridor.
It wasn't a guard. It was a man wearing an immaculate bespoke charcoal suit, a silver lapel pin shaped like an interlocking gear glinting under the harsh lights. It was Victor Vance—not the police captain, but Christopher’s ruthless chief of corporate security and former intelligence operative.
Victor stopped in front of Juliette’s cell, pulling a thick manila envelope from his briefcase. He didn't speak immediately; he just stared at her with a look of profound, chilling amusement.
"Who sent you?" Juliette spat out, her voice raspy and desperate. "Is it Christopher? Tell him I want to negotiate. I’ll sign a non-disclosure agreement. I’ll walk away with nothing! Just don't let them send me to Europe."
Victor let out a low, dry chuckle. "Negotiate? Mrs. Sterling, you don't have any leverage left. In fact, you never did. Do you honestly believe a woman of your... colorful background could infiltrate the inner circle of the Sterling family by sheer coincidence?"
Juliette’s breath hitched. Her eyes widened in sheer disbelief. "What... what are you talking about?"
Victor casually flipped open the manila envelope, sliding a single sheet of glossy photographic paper against the glass partition. Juliette stared at it, and the blood drained completely from her face.
It was a photograph of her standing outside a Swiss bank five years ago—the exact day her second husband's death certificate was signed. Standing ten feet away in the background, half-hidden behind a pillar in a dark trench coat, was Christopher Sterling.

"He knew," Juliette whispered, her voice trembling violently as the horrible truth crashed down upon her. "He knew from the very first day we met."
"From day one," Victor confirmed smoothly, tapping the glass. "You thought you targeted a wealthy, vulnerable widower grieving his first wife. In reality, Christopher had been tracking international financial predators ever since his brother's suspicious death abroad. You walked right into his spiderweb, Juliette. And now, the spider is ready to feed."
